Elbow issues
I apologize for the inconvenience, but I would like to ask about an issue.
Several years ago, I bumped my left elbow against a table.
At that moment, I only felt heat in my left hand and pain in the elbow.
However, as it improved, I gradually ignored it.
Recently, whenever I do push-ups, my left elbow starts to hurt, and I feel a twitching sensation in the tendons.
I also experience pain during other triceps exercises.
Can this heal, or should I just wear an elbow brace while training? Thank you for your response, doctor.

Dr. Li Yongheng reply Orthopedics
Based on your symptoms, it is possible that you have lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow).
It is recommended that you visit an orthopedic or rehabilitation clinic for evaluation, and you should be able to recover.
Wishing you a speedy recovery.

More Info
Elbow pain can be a common issue, especially for those who engage in physical activities or have had previous injuries. Based on your description, it seems that you may be experiencing symptoms related to a previous injury to your left elbow, which could potentially involve conditions such as tendinitis, bursitis, or even a more serious injury like a ligament tear.
Causes of Elbow Pain
1. Tendinitis: This is inflammation of the tendons around the elbow, often caused by repetitive motions or overuse. In your case, performing push-ups and triceps exercises could exacerbate this condition.
2. Bursitis: The bursa is a small fluid-filled sac that reduces friction between tissues. If it becomes inflamed, it can cause pain and swelling in the elbow.
3. Ligament Injuries: If you experienced a significant impact when you hit your elbow, it could have caused damage to the ligaments, which may not have healed properly.
4. Nerve Compression: Sometimes, elbow pain can be related to nerve issues, such as ulnar nerve entrapment, which can cause symptoms like tingling or a "jumping" sensation in the arm.
Treatment Options
1. Rest and Activity Modification: It's crucial to give your elbow time to heal. Avoid activities that exacerbate the pain, such as push-ups or heavy lifting.
2. Ice Therapy: Applying ice to the affected area can help reduce inflammation and numb the pain. Aim for 15-20 minutes of ice application several times a day.
3. Over-the-Counter Pain Relief: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen or naproxen can help alleviate pain and reduce inflammation. However, consult with a healthcare provider before starting any medication, especially if you have other health conditions.
4. Physical Therapy: A physical therapist can provide you with exercises to strengthen the muscles around the elbow and improve flexibility. They can also teach you proper techniques to avoid future injuries.
5. Supportive Devices: Using an elbow brace or support can help stabilize the joint during activities and may alleviate pain while you continue to train.
6. Gradual Return to Activity: Once the pain subsides, gradually reintroduce activities. Start with low-impact exercises and slowly increase intensity as tolerated.
Recovery Tips
- Listen to Your Body: If an activity causes pain, stop immediately. Pushing through pain can lead to further injury.
- Warm-Up and Stretch: Always warm up before exercising and include stretching in your routine to maintain flexibility in the muscles and tendons around the elbow.
- Strengthening Exercises: Once you are pain-free, consider incorporating strengthening exercises for the forearm and elbow to prevent future injuries. Focus on both the flexors and extensors of the forearm.
- Consult a Specialist: If your symptoms persist despite conservative treatment, it may be beneficial to consult an orthopedic specialist. They can perform imaging studies, such as an X-ray or MRI, to assess for any underlying issues.
In conclusion, while elbow pain can be concerning, many cases can be effectively managed with rest, proper care, and rehabilitation. It is essential to address the pain early on to prevent chronic issues. If you find that your symptoms do not improve or worsen, seeking professional medical advice is crucial for a tailored treatment plan.
