Painful erection
Doctor, about three weeks ago one night I was suddenly awakened by pain in my penis, which I had never experienced before.
A week later, I visited a clinic, but the doctor examined me and said there were no visible abnormalities and advised me to rest at home.
However, after two weeks, the symptoms have not improved much (it feels slightly better), but I still experience pain during morning erections.
The pain is located around the mid-shaft of the penis, just below the glans.
During normal activities, I don't feel much discomfort; it only hurts during erections (although sometimes I don't feel anything during erections).
The main times I experience pain are during morning erections.
What should I do?

Hello: Some people may feel uncomfortable with morning erections, but usually, moving around can help alleviate the discomfort.
However, if it is truly bothersome, it would be advisable to consult a urologist at a hospital.
Wishing you good health.

More Info
Experiencing painful erections can be a distressing and confusing issue. It’s important to understand that while occasional discomfort can occur, persistent pain during erections, especially if it disrupts your sleep or daily life, warrants further investigation. Here’s a comprehensive overview of potential causes, solutions, and when to seek further medical advice.
Potential Causes of Painful Erections
1. Peyronie's Disease: This condition involves the development of fibrous scar tissue inside the penis, which can cause painful erections and curvature. It often develops gradually and can be associated with trauma or injury to the penis.
2. Infection: Infections of the penis, such as sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or urinary tract infections (UTIs), can lead to inflammation and pain during erections. Symptoms may include redness, swelling, or discharge.
3. Priapism: This is a condition characterized by prolonged and often painful erections that can last for hours. It can be caused by certain medications, blood disorders, or other underlying health issues.
4. Nerve Damage: Conditions that affect nerve function, such as diabetes or multiple sclerosis, can lead to abnormal sensations or pain during erections.
5. Psychological Factors: Anxiety, stress, or depression can manifest physically, leading to discomfort during sexual arousal or erections.
6. Physical Trauma: Any recent injury to the pelvic area or penis can result in pain during erections. This includes sports injuries or accidents.
Solutions and Management
1. Consult a Specialist: Since your symptoms have persisted for several weeks, it’s advisable to consult a urologist who specializes in male reproductive health. They can perform a more thorough examination, including imaging studies if necessary.
2. Medication Review: If you are taking any medications, discuss them with your doctor. Some medications can cause erectile dysfunction or discomfort as a side effect.
3. Pain Management: Over-the-counter pain relief medications, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, may help alleviate discomfort. However, consult your doctor before starting any new medication.
4. Avoiding Irritants: Ensure that you are not using any harsh soaps or lotions on the genital area that could cause irritation. Opt for mild, unscented products.
5. Lifestyle Modifications: Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can improve overall sexual health. This includes regular exercise, a balanced diet, and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption.
6. Psychological Support: If anxiety or stress is a contributing factor, consider speaking with a mental health professional. Therapy can provide coping strategies and help address any underlying emotional issues.
When to Seek Immediate Help
If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek immediate medical attention:
- Severe pain that does not improve with over-the-counter medications.
- An erection lasting longer than four hours (priapism).
- Signs of infection, such as fever, chills, or unusual discharge.
- Significant changes in the appearance of the penis, such as swelling or discoloration.
Conclusion
Painful erections can stem from a variety of causes, and while some may resolve on their own, persistent pain should not be ignored. A thorough evaluation by a healthcare professional is essential to determine the underlying cause and appropriate treatment. Remember, addressing sexual health issues is important for overall well-being, and seeking help is a proactive step towards recovery.
