Post-Wisdom Tooth Extraction: Is It Normal to Experience Gum Itching and Tooth Shifting? - Dentistry

After wisdom tooth extraction

I had my lower left wisdom tooth extracted, and after a week, my lower gums were itchy.
Now, entering the second week, I've noticed some shifting of my teeth.
Additionally, it feels like my canine tooth is about to fall out, although it feels quite firm, and I also feel like my gums are receding.
Is this phenomenon normal? Thank you.

After wisdom tooth extraction, it is not uncommon to experience various sensations and changes in the mouth, including gum itching and tooth shifting. Let's break down your concerns and provide some insights based on medical knowledge.

1. Gum Itching: Itching in the gums after a tooth extraction can occur for several reasons. One common cause is the healing process itself. As the gum tissue begins to heal, it can become sensitive and may itch as new tissue forms. Additionally, if there is any residual inflammation or irritation from the extraction site, this could also contribute to the itching sensation. It's essential to maintain good oral hygiene during this time to prevent infection, which can exacerbate discomfort.

2. Tooth Shifting: The sensation of tooth shifting is also not unusual after the extraction of a wisdom tooth. When a tooth is removed, the surrounding teeth may shift slightly to fill the space left behind. This movement can be more pronounced if the extracted tooth was a significant anchor for adjacent teeth. Over time, your teeth may stabilize, but if you notice significant movement or discomfort, it may be worth consulting your dentist.

3. Feeling of Tooth Loosening: The sensation that your canine tooth (虎牙) feels loose could be related to the changes in the surrounding gum tissue and bone after the extraction. When a tooth is removed, the supporting structures can be affected, leading to temporary looseness in adjacent teeth. However, if the tooth feels significantly loose or if you experience pain, it is crucial to seek dental advice.
4. Gum Recession: The feeling of gum recession or thinning gums can also be a concern after tooth extraction. This can happen as the gum tissue heals and reshapes itself. If you notice that your gums appear to be receding or if you are experiencing sensitivity in the area, it is advisable to discuss this with your dentist. They may recommend treatments or interventions to promote gum health.

5. When to Seek Help: If the itching persists, or if you experience increased pain, swelling, or any signs of infection (such as pus or fever), you should contact your dentist immediately. They can assess the healing process and determine if any further treatment is necessary.

In summary, while some degree of gum itching and tooth shifting can be normal after wisdom tooth extraction, it is essential to monitor your symptoms. Maintaining good oral hygiene, following post-operative care instructions, and attending follow-up appointments with your dentist will help ensure proper healing. If you have any concerns about your symptoms or if they worsen, do not hesitate to reach out to your dental care provider for further evaluation and guidance.
