Clear discharge from the glans penis?

Hello doctor, recently I have noticed a clear discharge from the urethral opening, which feels similar to the clear fluid that is secreted before ejaculation during an erection.
While it is normal to have such secretions during an erection, I have been experiencing this discharge even when not erect for almost a week now.
The fluid is clear and colorless, without any strong odor.
Additionally, I have started to feel a slight discomfort in my lower abdomen.
What could these symptoms indicate?

Wenwen, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2017/08/18

The presence of clear discharge from the urethral opening can be concerning, especially when it occurs outside of the context of sexual arousal or activity. In general, the urethra can produce a small amount of clear fluid, which is often normal and can be related to pre-ejaculatory fluid. However, if this discharge is persistent and occurs without sexual stimulation, it may indicate an underlying issue that requires further evaluation.

There are several potential causes for clear discharge from the urethra:
1. Urethritis: This is an inflammation of the urethra, which can be caused by infections (bacterial, viral, or fungal) or irritation from chemicals or physical trauma. Urethritis can lead to symptoms such as discharge, burning during urination, and discomfort in the lower abdomen.

2. Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Certain STIs, such as chlamydia or gonorrhea, can cause urethral discharge. While these infections often present with more pronounced symptoms, such as pain or burning during urination, they can sometimes manifest with only mild or clear discharge.

3. Prostatitis: Inflammation of the prostate gland can cause discomfort in the lower abdomen and may lead to changes in urinary function, including discharge. Prostatitis can be acute or chronic and may require medical treatment.

4. Other Infections: Infections of the bladder (cystitis) or other parts of the urinary tract can also lead to changes in discharge and may be accompanied by other symptoms such as frequent urination, urgency, or pain.

5. Non-infectious Causes: Sometimes, clear discharge can be due to non-infectious causes such as irritation from soaps, lotions, or other products that come into contact with the genital area.

Given that you have experienced this symptom for nearly a week and are also feeling discomfort in your lower abdomen, it is important to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include a physical examination, urine tests, and possibly swabs to check for infections.
In terms of concerns, it is essential to rule out any serious conditions, especially STIs or other infections that may require treatment. Early diagnosis and management can help prevent complications and ensure that any underlying issues are addressed promptly.

In summary, while clear discharge from the urethra can sometimes be normal, the persistence of this symptom, especially when accompanied by discomfort, warrants a medical evaluation. It is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional who can provide a proper diagnosis and recommend appropriate treatment based on your specific situation.
