Chest compressions can be painful?
Hello Doctor: For the past couple of days, I have been experiencing pain in my left chest area.
I'm not sure if I pressed too hard, but today, even lightly touching the upper left chest (about five centimeters below the clavicle) causes significant pain.
If I don't touch it, the pain is manageable.
However, any pressure or touch to that area results in pain.
Last week, I had a breast ultrasound at the breast surgery department, and the results were normal.
However, yesterday while pressing on my chest, I felt two small lumps that felt like lymph nodes, but since I had the ultrasound and it was normal, I'm unsure if this pain is due to my own excessive pressure causing some injury.

Hello: Pain upon palpation is more likely indicative of a chest wall contusion or myofascitis, and medical evaluation is still necessary.

More Info
Chest pain can be a concerning symptom, especially when it is localized and associated with pressure or touch. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing pain in the left upper chest area, specifically around five centimeters below the collarbone, which worsens with pressure. This type of pain can have several potential causes, and it is essential to understand them to determine when to seek medical help.
Possible Causes of Chest Pain After Pressing
1. Musculoskeletal Issues: The most common cause of localized chest pain, especially after pressing or applying pressure, is musculoskeletal strain. This can occur if you have overexerted yourself or if there is tension in the muscles around the chest wall. Conditions such as costochondritis, which is inflammation of the cartilage connecting the ribs to the sternum, can also lead to pain that is exacerbated by touch or movement.
2. Nerve Irritation: Nerve irritation or compression in the thoracic region can lead to pain that feels sharp or tender when pressure is applied. This can happen due to poor posture, repetitive movements, or even a previous injury.
3. Lymphadenopathy: You mentioned feeling small lumps that resemble lymph nodes. While you had a normal breast ultrasound, it is still possible that nearby lymph nodes could be reactive due to various benign conditions, such as infections or inflammation. However, if these nodes are painful and palpable, it may warrant further investigation.
4. Referred Pain: Sometimes, pain in the chest can be referred from other areas, such as the neck or abdomen. Conditions affecting the heart, lungs, or gastrointestinal tract can sometimes present as chest pain, even if the primary issue is not in the chest itself.
5. Anxiety and Stress: Emotional factors can also contribute to chest pain. Anxiety can lead to muscle tension and hyperventilation, which can cause discomfort in the chest area.
When to Seek Help
While many causes of chest pain are benign, certain symptoms should prompt immediate medical attention:
- Severe Pain: If the pain is severe, sudden, or feels like a pressure or squeezing sensation, it could indicate a more serious condition, such as a heart attack.
- Radiating Pain: If the pain radiates to the arm, back, neck, or jaw, this could also be a sign of a cardiac issue.
- Accompanying Symptoms: If you experience shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, dizziness, or palpitations along with the chest pain, seek emergency medical care.
- Persistent Pain: If the pain does not improve with rest or over-the-counter pain relief, or if it worsens over time, you should consult a healthcare professional.
Recommendations
Given that you have recently undergone a breast ultrasound that was normal, it is less likely that the pain is related to a serious breast condition. However, if you suspect that the pain is due to pressing too hard or if you have concerns about the lumps you felt, it would be wise to follow up with your healthcare provider. They may recommend further evaluation, such as imaging studies or a physical examination, to rule out any underlying issues.
In the meantime, consider the following self-care measures:
- Rest: Avoid activities that exacerbate the pain.
- Ice Application: Applying ice to the affected area may help reduce inflammation and pain.
- Over-the-Counter Pain Relief: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen can help alleviate pain and reduce inflammation.
- Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any changes in your symptoms, including the size or tenderness of the lumps you felt.
In conclusion, while localized chest pain after pressing can often be benign, it is essential to remain vigilant and seek medical advice if the symptoms change or worsen. Your health and peace of mind are paramount, so do not hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional for further evaluation.
