Is Leaving a Black Stitch After Circumcision Harmful? - Urology

Surgical issues

On August 25th, after the circumcision stitches were removed, I returned home and briefly rinsed the area.
While drying, I noticed that there is still a black thread at the top of the glans that hasn't been removed.
Is this harmful?

Hello: The sutures used in a typical circumcision procedure are absorbable and will dissolve in a few days.
If you see them, you can gently pull on the suture ends to help them fall off.
If that doesn't work, you should return for a follow-up appointment.
Wishing you good health.

Leaving a black stitch after circumcision is generally not harmful, but it is important to understand the context and implications of this situation. After circumcision, it is common for stitches to be used to close the incision. These stitches can be either absorbable or non-absorbable. Absorbable stitches dissolve on their own over time, while non-absorbable stitches need to be removed by a healthcare professional.

In your case, if the black stitch you noticed is part of the non-absorbable sutures, it is advisable to have it evaluated by your doctor. Leaving a non-absorbable stitch in place can lead to several potential issues, including:
1. Infection: Any foreign material left in the body can increase the risk of infection. If the stitch is not causing any irritation or signs of infection (such as redness, swelling, or discharge), it may not pose an immediate risk, but it is still important to monitor the area.

2. Irritation or Inflammation: A stitch that is not removed can cause irritation to the surrounding tissue, leading to inflammation or discomfort. This can be particularly concerning in sensitive areas like the genital region.

3. Scarring: Non-absorbable stitches can sometimes lead to more pronounced scarring if they are left in place longer than necessary. This can affect the cosmetic outcome of the circumcision.

4. Granulation Tissue Formation: Sometimes, the body may react to a retained stitch by forming granulation tissue, which can be raised and red, and may require treatment.

If the stitch is absorbable, it may eventually dissolve on its own, but it is still a good idea to consult with your healthcare provider to confirm that it is indeed absorbable and to ensure that there are no complications.

In summary, while leaving a black stitch after circumcision is not typically harmful, it is important to have it assessed by a medical professional. They can determine whether it is necessary to remove the stitch and check for any signs of infection or other complications. Regular follow-up after surgical procedures is crucial to ensure proper healing and to address any concerns that may arise. If you experience any unusual symptoms, such as increased pain, swelling, or discharge, seek medical attention promptly.
