Glans issues
Doctor, I would like to ask about a situation.
Last week, I was hospitalized for diverticulitis and received treatment for a week, including a week of antibiotics.
However, upon discharge, I noticed that the foreskin is red and swollen, occasionally itchy, and there is a burning sensation and slight stabbing pain when urinating.
The glans has some white, peeling areas.
After returning home, I washed with clean water and noticed small white wounds on both sides of the frenulum.
There was some stinging after washing, and I have also observed some cracks in the foreskin, which has become quite tight.
Is there a way for this condition to heal without seeing a doctor? Would applying petroleum jelly help improve the situation?

More Info
When dealing with issues related to the glans and foreskin, it is essential to understand the symptoms, potential causes, and appropriate home remedies. Based on your description, it appears that you are experiencing inflammation and irritation of the foreskin (known as balanitis) following a recent hospitalization for diverticulitis and antibiotic treatment. This situation can be uncomfortable and concerning, but there are steps you can take to manage your symptoms.
Symptoms
The symptoms you mentioned, including redness, swelling, itching, burning sensation during urination, and peeling of the glans, are indicative of balanitis or possibly a related condition. The presence of small white wounds or cracks in the foreskin can also suggest irritation or infection. These symptoms can arise from several factors, including:
1. Infection: Bacterial or fungal infections can lead to inflammation of the glans and foreskin.
2. Irritation: This can be caused by soaps, lotions, or other products that come into contact with the genital area.
3. Antibiotic Use: Antibiotics can disrupt the natural balance of bacteria, potentially leading to yeast infections, which can cause similar symptoms.
4. Poor Hygiene: Inadequate cleaning can lead to the accumulation of smegma, which can irritate the skin.
5. Skin Conditions: Conditions like eczema or psoriasis can also affect the genital area.
Home Remedies
While it is always advisable to consult a healthcare professional for persistent or severe symptoms, there are some home remedies you can try to alleviate your discomfort:
1. Gentle Cleaning: Use warm water to gently clean the area. Avoid harsh soaps or chemicals that can further irritate the skin.
2. Moisturizing: Applying a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer like petroleum jelly (Vaseline) can help soothe the skin and prevent further irritation. However, be cautious with excessive application, as it can trap moisture and potentially worsen fungal infections.
3. Avoid Irritants: Refrain from using scented soaps, lotions, or other products that may irritate the area.
4. Loose Clothing: Wear loose-fitting underwear and clothing to reduce friction and allow the area to breathe.
5. Cold Compress: Applying a cold compress can help reduce swelling and provide temporary relief from itching or burning sensations.
When to Seek Medical Attention
If your symptoms persist or worsen despite home treatment, it is crucial to seek medical attention. Signs that warrant a visit to a healthcare provider include:
- Increased redness, swelling, or pain
- Discharge from the penis
- Fever or systemic symptoms
- Persistent itching or burning that does not improve
Conclusion
While home remedies can provide temporary relief, they are not a substitute for professional medical advice. Given your recent health issues and the symptoms you are experiencing, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation. They can determine the underlying cause of your symptoms and recommend appropriate treatment, which may include topical medications or further diagnostic tests. Remember, early intervention can prevent complications and promote faster recovery.
