Vaginal Fistula Surgery
Hello, doctor.
I had a vaginal fistula plug surgery (Biodesign Surgisis Anal Fistula Plug) 10 days ago.
Will the fistula plug come out with bowel movements? I've been feeling some air coming from the vagina these past two days.
I'm not sure if it's due to swallowed air or if the plug has come out.
Thank you.

This type of embolization is generally used for anal fistulas and rectovaginal fistulas.
Personally, I do not have experience with this, as rectovaginal fistulas are relatively short and superficial, which increases the possibility of dislodgment.
If you are experiencing vaginal gas passage, it is likely that the embolization has fallen out.
Please have your surgeon examine you again and discuss the subsequent treatment plan.

After undergoing a vaginal fistula surgery with a Biodesign Surgisis Anal Fistula Plug, it's understandable to have concerns about the healing process and the functionality of the plug. The Biodesign plug is designed to promote healing by providing a scaffold for tissue regeneration and to help close the fistula. Here’s what you can expect post-surgery and answers to your specific concerns.
Firstly, it is important to understand that the Biodesign plug is made from a biologically derived material that is intended to integrate with your tissue over time. It is not uncommon for patients to experience some sensations, such as gas or air movement in the vaginal area, especially in the early days following surgery. This can occur as the body adjusts to the changes and as the healing process begins. If you are feeling air or gas, it may not necessarily indicate that the plug has dislodged or fallen out.
Regarding your concern about whether the plug will come out with bowel movements, the plug is designed to remain in place as it integrates with your tissue. It should not be expelled with stool. However, if you experience significant discomfort, unusual bleeding, or if you believe the plug has dislodged, it is crucial to contact your healthcare provider for an evaluation. They may perform a physical examination to ensure that the plug is still in place and that there are no complications.
In the days following the surgery, it is common to have some discharge or changes in sensation as your body heals. You may also experience some swelling or tenderness in the area. It is essential to follow your surgeon's post-operative care instructions, which may include recommendations for hygiene, activity restrictions, and signs of complications to watch for.
As for the healing process, it typically takes several weeks for the tissue to regenerate and for the plug to integrate properly. During this time, you should avoid activities that could put strain on the area, such as heavy lifting or vigorous exercise. Gentle movements and light activities are usually encouraged, but always consult your doctor for personalized advice.
If you have any concerns about your recovery, such as persistent pain, unusual discharge, or any signs of infection (like fever or increased redness), do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider. They can provide reassurance and guidance tailored to your specific situation.
In summary, while it is normal to have some sensations and concerns after your surgery, the Biodesign plug is designed to stay in place and aid in the healing of the fistula. Monitoring your symptoms and maintaining open communication with your healthcare provider will help ensure a smooth recovery.
