Sudden Itching Under the Foreskin: Causes and Remedies - Urology

Recently, the foreskin has suddenly become very itchy?

I've been experiencing intense itching on the inner side of my foreskin for the past seven days.
There are small, shallow sores near the glans.
I've read a lot about it but I'm not sure if it's balanitis.
I have phimosis, but I clean it thoroughly with body wash every day.
After washing, I also open it up to let it dry.
I'm not sure why it's so itchy.
Will it heal on its own? Can I apply something like petroleum jelly?

More Info

Sudden itching under the foreskin can be a distressing experience, and it’s important to understand the potential causes and remedies for this condition. The symptoms you describe, including itching for about seven days and the presence of small, broken skin areas near the glans (head of the penis), suggest that you may be experiencing a form of balanitis or posthitis, which is inflammation of the glans or the foreskin, respectively.

Possible Causes
1. Balanitis/Posthitis: This is the most common cause of itching under the foreskin. It can be due to various factors, including poor hygiene, irritation from soaps or detergents, or infections (bacterial or fungal). Given that you mentioned you have phimosis (a condition where the foreskin cannot be easily retracted), this can contribute to moisture retention and irritation, making you more susceptible to infections.

2. Yeast Infection: A yeast infection, particularly caused by Candida species, can lead to itching and irritation. This is more common in individuals with diabetes or those who are immunocompromised.

3. Contact Dermatitis: Irritation from soaps, lotions, or even laundry detergents can cause an allergic reaction, leading to itching and discomfort.

4. Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Certain STIs can present with itching and irritation. If you have had unprotected sexual contact, it may be worth considering this possibility.

5. Skin Conditions: Conditions such as psoriasis or eczema can also affect the genital area, leading to itching and discomfort.

Remedies and Recommendations
1. Maintain Hygiene: Continue to practice good hygiene by gently cleaning the area with warm water. Avoid using harsh soaps or body washes that may irritate the skin. It’s advisable to use a mild, unscented soap.

2. Drying the Area: After washing, ensure that the area is thoroughly dried. Moist environments can promote the growth of fungi and bacteria.

3. Avoid Irritants: If you suspect that soaps or other products may be causing irritation, discontinue their use. Opt for hypoallergenic products.

4. Topical Treatments: Applying a barrier cream, such as petroleum jelly (Vaseline), can help protect the area from further irritation. However, if there is an active infection, it’s best to avoid applying anything until you consult a healthcare provider.

5. Over-the-Counter Antifungals: If you suspect a yeast infection, over-the-counter antifungal creams may be beneficial. However, it’s best to consult a healthcare professional before starting any treatment.

6. Consult a Healthcare Provider: If the itching persists or worsens, or if you notice any discharge, swelling, or pain, it’s crucial to see a healthcare provider. They can perform a physical examination, possibly take a culture or swab, and provide a definitive diagnosis and treatment plan.

7. Avoid Self-Diagnosis: While researching symptoms online can provide some insights, it’s important to avoid self-diagnosing. Conditions affecting the genital area can vary widely, and a healthcare professional can offer the most accurate diagnosis.

Conclusion
In summary, sudden itching under the foreskin can be caused by various factors, including infections, irritants, or skin conditions. While maintaining good hygiene and avoiding irritants are essential first steps, it’s crucial to consult a healthcare provider for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan, especially if symptoms persist. Early intervention can help prevent complications and ensure a quicker resolution to your discomfort.
