Post-operative care for sebaceous cyst removal?

Hello, Doctor.
I had an outpatient procedure on September 8th to remove a small sebaceous cyst from my chest.
On September 11th, I returned to see the doctor, who replaced the large gauze with simple, breathable adhesive tape and 3M cosmetic tape.
That day, the doctor advised me not to get the area wet and to apply povidone-iodine on the tape daily for two weeks.
Now, two weeks have passed, and I can shower and change the tape myself (the wound has a dark line and feels firm).
However, I forgot to ask the doctor if I could start exercising.
Currently, I have only been doing lower body workouts or yoga, but I would like to start full-body exercises.
Can I begin exercising now, especially movements that engage the chest muscles, such as push-ups? Thank you, Doctor.

After undergoing a sebaceous cyst removal surgery, it is crucial to follow proper post-operative care and exercise guidelines to ensure optimal healing and prevent complications. Here’s a comprehensive overview of what you should consider regarding your recovery and when to resume physical activities.

Post-Surgery Care
1. Wound Care: Since you have already transitioned from a larger bandage to a breathable adhesive tape, it is essential to keep the area clean and dry. Continue applying the iodine solution as directed by your physician for at least two weeks post-surgery to prevent infection. If you notice any signs of infection, such as increased redness, swelling, or discharge, contact your healthcare provider immediately.

2. Monitoring the Incision: The black line you see is likely the suture line. It’s normal for the area to feel hard as the tissue heals. However, if you experience significant pain, swelling, or any unusual changes, it’s advisable to consult your doctor.

3. Avoiding Water Exposure: You mentioned that you were advised not to get the area wet for the first two weeks. Now that you have been cleared to shower, be gentle when washing the area. Avoid soaking in baths or swimming pools until your doctor confirms that it is safe to do so.

Resuming Physical Activity
1. Timing: Generally, light activities can be resumed within a few weeks after surgery, but it’s essential to listen to your body. Since you are already doing lower body exercises and yoga, you are on the right track. However, for activities that engage the chest muscles, such as push-ups or any heavy lifting, it’s best to wait a bit longer.

2. Gradual Increase in Activity: Start with low-impact exercises that do not strain the chest area. Activities like walking, gentle stretching, or yoga that focuses on flexibility without putting pressure on the upper body are excellent choices. Gradually increase the intensity as you feel more comfortable.

3. Specific Exercises: When you feel ready to incorporate upper body movements, begin with light resistance exercises. Avoid any movements that cause discomfort or strain in the surgical area. Exercises like seated rows with light resistance bands or gentle chest stretches can be beneficial.

4. Listening to Your Body: Pay attention to how your body responds to increased activity. If you experience pain or discomfort in the surgical area, it’s a sign to scale back and allow more time for healing.

Consultation with Your Doctor
Before resuming any vigorous activities or exercises that heavily involve the chest muscles, it’s advisable to consult your surgeon. They can provide personalized recommendations based on your healing progress and overall health.

Conclusion
In summary, while you can gradually resume physical activities, it is vital to prioritize your healing process. Start with gentle movements, monitor your body’s responses, and consult your healthcare provider for tailored advice. By following these guidelines, you can ensure a smooth recovery and return to your regular exercise routine safely.
