Four months after varicocele surgery?

Hello, doctor.
I underwent bilateral varicocele ligation via low-position laparoscopic surgery in early June this year, and it has been over four months since then.
I would like to ask the following questions, thank you!
1.
The right side still feels the same as before the surgery, with a sensation of heaviness, and the appearance is also quite similar.
With just over a month left until the typical recovery period of six months, is this considered normal?

2.
Does this phenomenon indicate that the postoperative recovery is not ideal? Should I continue to refrain from exercising to avoid worsening the condition? (I have stopped all physical activities since the surgery.)
3.
Since the discomfort on the right side is more pronounced, should I force myself to sleep on my left side to aid in recovery?
4.
I initially sought medical attention due to discomfort from the right varicocele (later discovering mild varicocele on the left side as well).
In addition to the scrotal ultrasound, I also underwent a CT scan of the lower abdomen, which fortunately did not reveal any unknown masses compressing the veins.
Given that there has been no significant improvement post-surgery, should I continue to pursue further examinations and follow-ups?

Hello: Varicocele is prone to recurrence, so it is important to have follow-up appointments for some time after surgery.
If you experience any symptoms, it is even more necessary to return for a check-up.
If you have any questions, please consult your surgeon.
Wishing you good health.

After undergoing varicocele surgery, it is not uncommon for patients to have lingering symptoms or concerns about their recovery. Here are some insights and recommendations based on your questions regarding your post-operative experience four months after the procedure.

1. Persistent Symptoms: It is not unusual for some patients to experience ongoing sensations such as heaviness or discomfort in the affected area even after surgery. The recovery period can vary significantly among individuals. While many patients notice improvement within a few months, others may take longer to heal completely. The fact that you are still feeling a similar sensation on the right side as before surgery could be due to several factors, including inflammation, nerve irritation, or even psychological factors related to the surgery. However, if the symptoms persist or worsen, it is essential to follow up with your surgeon to rule out any complications or the possibility of recurrence.

2. Activity Restrictions: Continuing to avoid strenuous activities and heavy lifting post-surgery is generally advisable, especially if you are experiencing discomfort. Engaging in physical activities too soon can exacerbate symptoms and potentially lead to complications. It is crucial to listen to your body and consult your healthcare provider about when it is safe to resume normal activities. They may recommend a gradual return to exercise, starting with light activities and progressively increasing intensity as tolerated.

3. Sleeping Position: While there is no definitive evidence that sleeping on one side versus the other significantly impacts recovery from varicocele surgery, comfort is key. If sleeping on your left side alleviates discomfort, it may be worth trying. However, it is essential to prioritize a position that allows you to rest well and does not cause additional strain on your body.

4. Follow-Up and Monitoring: Given that you have undergone imaging studies like ultrasound and CT scans that did not reveal any significant issues, it is reassuring. However, if you continue to experience discomfort or if your symptoms change, it is prudent to have follow-up appointments. Regular monitoring can help ensure that any potential complications are addressed early. Your surgeon may recommend additional imaging or tests if they suspect any underlying issues that need to be investigated further.

In summary, while some ongoing symptoms can be normal after varicocele surgery, it is essential to maintain open communication with your healthcare provider. They can provide personalized advice based on your specific situation and help you navigate your recovery effectively. If you have concerns about your symptoms or recovery process, do not hesitate to reach out to your surgeon for guidance. They can help determine the best course of action to ensure a successful recovery and address any lingering issues you may be experiencing.
