Varicocele surgery
Hello, Doctor Hsu.
I have a follow-up question.
Thank you.
I had varicocele surgery two months ago, but the veins have not yet subsided, and sometimes I still feel discomfort and warmth.
Recently, I also noticed that my semen appears yellow.
Is this normal? I understand that recovery after surgery generally takes a long time, but during the first six months before complete improvement, will I experience the same symptoms as before the surgery? I am about to enlist in the military, and I am really worried about a recurrence or that the surgery was in vain.
Thank you for your response.
KK, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2006/11/08
Dr. Xu Weikai reply Urology
KK: Generally, it takes about six months to fully recover.
The recurrence rate is related to the surgical method and individual constitution, with approximately 10% of patients having a possibility of recurrence.
If a complete recovery occurs, those bothersome symptoms will completely disappear, and you will feel much more relaxed without any pressure or discomfort.
During the recovery period, symptoms typically gradually diminish until they completely resolve.
However, some individuals may experience some pain at the surgical site; in such cases, it is recommended to apply local heat to the wound, which can enhance healing.
This response is from Dr.
Hsu Wei-Kai, Director of the Urology Department at Taitung Hospital, Department of Health, Executive Yuan.

Post-varicocele surgery recovery can be a nuanced process, and it's understandable to have concerns about symptoms and overall healing, especially as you prepare for military service. After a varicocele repair, it is common for patients to experience a range of symptoms as they recover, and it can take time for the body to heal completely.
Firstly, it’s important to recognize that some swelling and discomfort in the area can persist for weeks or even months after surgery. The blood vessels may take time to fully resolve, and it is not unusual for patients to notice that the veins do not disappear immediately after the procedure. The presence of yellowish semen can also be concerning, but it may not necessarily indicate a serious issue. Changes in semen color can be attributed to various factors, including inflammation or minor bleeding, which can occur after surgery. However, if this symptom persists or is accompanied by pain, fever, or other concerning signs, it is crucial to follow up with your healthcare provider.
Regarding your concerns about the potential for recurrence of symptoms, it is essential to understand that while some patients may experience a return of discomfort similar to pre-surgery symptoms, this is not the case for everyone. The goal of the surgery is to alleviate the symptoms associated with varicocele, such as pain and discomfort, and to improve fertility outcomes. However, some patients may still experience mild discomfort or changes in sensation as they heal.
In terms of recovery time, it is generally expected that full recovery can take several months. During this period, it is advisable to avoid heavy lifting or strenuous activities that could put strain on the surgical site. Engaging in light activities and following your surgeon's recommendations for rehabilitation can help facilitate healing.
If you are experiencing persistent discomfort, fever, or any other unusual symptoms, it is essential to consult your surgeon or a urologist. They may recommend imaging studies, such as an ultrasound, to assess the surgical site and ensure that there are no complications, such as a recurrence of the varicocele or other issues.
As you prepare for military service, it is crucial to communicate with your commanding officer about your medical history and any ongoing symptoms. They can provide guidance on any necessary accommodations or restrictions based on your recovery status.
In summary, while some discomfort and changes in symptoms can be normal after varicocele surgery, it is essential to monitor your condition closely. If you have any concerns about your recovery or if symptoms worsen, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further evaluation and guidance. Your health and well-being should always be a priority, especially as you transition into a new phase of life.
