Post-Hyaluronic Acid Chin Treatment: Causes of Swelling and Pain - Dermatology

Chin Hyaluronic Acid Fillers

After receiving hyaluronic acid injections in the chin, I experienced mild swelling and pain two days after doing wet compresses a week later.
Upon returning to the doctor, I was told it was inflammation.
After that, I applied skincare products on my chin, and it swelled and hurt again.
This has happened three times, and it seems that every time I apply skincare products, the swelling and pain return within a few days.
Could the swelling and pain be caused by using incompatible skincare products after the hyaluronic acid injection?

After receiving hyaluronic acid (HA) injections for chin enhancement, it’s not uncommon to experience swelling and pain, especially within the first week post-treatment. The symptoms you describe—mild swelling and pain that recurs after applying skincare products—can be attributed to several factors.

Firstly, it’s important to understand that HA injections can cause localized inflammation as part of the body’s natural healing response. This inflammation can manifest as swelling and tenderness in the treated area. Typically, this should subside within a few days to a week. However, if you notice that the swelling and pain persist or recur after applying certain products, it may indicate a sensitivity or allergic reaction to those products.

The skin around the chin is particularly sensitive after HA injections, as the procedure can disrupt the skin barrier. If you are using products that contain strong active ingredients (like retinoids, acids, or fragrances), they may irritate the skin and exacerbate inflammation. It’s advisable to use gentle, hypoallergenic skincare products during the recovery period. Look for products that are free from alcohol, fragrances, and harsh chemicals, as these can further irritate the skin.

Additionally, the technique used during the injection can also play a role in post-treatment reactions. If the HA was injected too superficially or if there was any trauma to the skin, it could lead to prolonged swelling or discomfort. In some cases, if the HA is not distributed evenly, it can create lumps or areas of unevenness that may feel uncomfortable.

If your doctor has assessed the area and confirmed that it is inflammation rather than an infection, it’s crucial to follow their advice. They may recommend applying a cold compress to reduce swelling and taking over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications to alleviate pain. If the swelling and pain continue to recur, it may be worth revisiting your healthcare provider to discuss your skincare routine and consider whether any of the products you are using could be contributing to your symptoms.

In summary, while some swelling and discomfort are normal after HA injections, persistent or recurrent symptoms—especially after using certain skincare products—should be carefully evaluated. Opt for gentle, non-irritating products, and maintain open communication with your healthcare provider about your symptoms and skincare regimen. If necessary, they may suggest a patch test for any new products or recommend a different approach to skincare during your recovery period.
