There is a foreign body sensation in the left eye while wearing contact lenses?

Hello, I started wearing contact lenses in 2011, and a few months ago, I began to feel a foreign body sensation in my left eye when wearing them.
Even after switching brands, the feeling remained similar.
Yesterday morning at 6 AM, I wore 14mm contact lenses with a water content of 42%, and I felt some pain in my left eye, so I removed the lenses.
It still hurts a bit now, and I didn't wear them today.
I have a foreign body sensation in my left eye, but my right eye feels normal, just like usual.
The left eye feels more uncomfortable.
What could be causing this? Thank you.

Dr. He Jianxian reply Ophthalmology

This situation usually occurs due to long-term wear of contact lenses, which can lead to changes in the conjunctiva.
The best solution at this time is to stop wearing contact lenses and visit an ophthalmologist for examination and treatment.
Wishing you a speedy recovery.

It sounds like you're experiencing discomfort in your left eye when wearing contact lenses, which can be quite frustrating. There are several potential reasons for this sensation, and understanding them can help you find a solution.

Firstly, the discomfort you're feeling could be related to the fit of the contact lens. If the lens is too tight or too loose on your left eye, it can cause irritation and a feeling of something being in your eye. This is especially true if you've switched brands or types of lenses recently. Each brand may have different curvature and thickness, which can affect how they sit on your eye. It might be beneficial to consult with your eye care professional to ensure that the lenses you are using are the right fit for your left eye.

Another possibility is that there may be an underlying issue with your left eye itself. Conditions such as dry eye syndrome, allergies, or even a minor infection can lead to discomfort when wearing contact lenses. Dry eyes can be exacerbated by contact lens wear, especially if you're using lenses with lower water content, like the 42% water content lenses you mentioned. If your left eye is more prone to dryness, it could explain the discomfort you're experiencing. Using lubricating eye drops specifically designed for contact lens wearers might help alleviate this issue.

Additionally, if there is any irritation or inflammation of the cornea or conjunctiva in your left eye, this could also lead to discomfort. Conditions such as keratitis (inflammation of the cornea) or conjunctivitis (inflammation of the conjunctiva) can cause symptoms like pain, redness, and a sensation of something being in the eye. If you suspect that you might have an infection or inflammation, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly.

Moreover, if you have a history of eye surgeries or other eye conditions, these could also contribute to the discomfort you're feeling. For instance, if you have had previous corneal abrasions or surgeries, the sensitivity of your left eye might be heightened compared to your right eye.

Lastly, it’s worth considering your overall eye health. Factors such as prolonged screen time, lack of sleep, or environmental irritants can contribute to eye discomfort. If you've been spending a lot of time in front of screens or in dry environments, this could exacerbate the feeling of discomfort in your left eye.

In conclusion, the discomfort in your left eye while wearing contact lenses could be due to a variety of factors, including lens fit, underlying eye conditions, dryness, or environmental influences. It is advisable to consult with an eye care professional who can conduct a thorough examination and provide personalized recommendations. They may suggest trying different types of lenses, using lubricating drops, or addressing any underlying conditions that may be contributing to your discomfort. Taking these steps can help ensure that your contact lens experience is comfortable and enjoyable.
