Am I Pregnant? Delayed Periods and Pregnancy Tests - Obstetrics and Gynecology

Are you pregnant?

Recently, I caught a cold and took a lot of strong cold medications.
My period usually comes on the 23rd, but after having sexual intercourse with my boyfriend on the night of the 22nd (we used a condom, but it was only for a few seconds without it), my period has been delayed.
I took a pregnancy test on the 26th, which showed negative.
Today, November 2nd, I tested again, and initially, the result showed one dark line and one faint line.
After about 1-2 minutes, it changed to just one line.
My period is now 8 days late.
Is this a sign of pregnancy, or could it be due to the medication, staying up late, or eating cold foods?

At sign, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2017/11/02

Hello, the factors that can affect the menstrual cycle or cause bleeding outside of menstruation are numerous, including age, environment, lifestyle, stress, emotional instability, weight changes, medications, emergency contraception, diet, polycystic ovary syndrome, uterine or cervical lesions, infections, ovulation, pregnancy, and breastfeeding, among others.
It is possible to conceive even if ejaculation does not occur during intercourse, and the effectiveness of condoms is not 100%.
It is recommended that if your period is more than a week late, you should consult a gynecologist to check for hormonal imbalances or other causes.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health, Dr.
Chang.

When it comes to understanding delayed periods and the possibility of pregnancy, there are several factors to consider. Based on your description, it seems that your menstrual cycle is typically regular, occurring around the 23rd of each month. However, this month, your period is delayed by 8 days, and you have had unprotected intercourse shortly before the expected date of your period. You also mentioned using a condom, which significantly reduces the likelihood of pregnancy if used correctly.

The first step in assessing whether you might be pregnant is to consider the results of your pregnancy tests. You mentioned that on November 2nd, you took a test that initially showed one dark line and one faint line, but then changed to just one line after a couple of minutes. This can be indicative of a few things:
1. Evaporation Line: Sometimes, if a test is read after the recommended time frame, a faint line can appear due to evaporation of the urine on the test strip, which does not indicate pregnancy.

2. Testing Too Early: If you tested too early, it is possible that the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which is produced during pregnancy, was not at a detectable level yet. This is especially true if your cycle is irregular or if you ovulated later than usual.

3. Sensitivity of the Test: Different pregnancy tests have varying sensitivities. Some may not detect lower levels of hCG, especially if taken too early.

Given that your period is delayed by 8 days, it would be advisable to take another pregnancy test, preferably with first-morning urine, which is more concentrated and may provide a more accurate result. If the test is still negative and your period does not arrive, you might want to consult a healthcare provider for further evaluation.

Regarding the medications you have taken for your cold, some over-the-counter medications can affect your menstrual cycle, but they typically do not cause a significant delay. Stress, changes in routine, and lifestyle factors such as diet and sleep patterns can also impact your menstrual cycle.
In summary, while the possibility of pregnancy cannot be completely ruled out, the use of a condom and the negative test results suggest that it is less likely. However, if your period does not arrive soon, or if you have any concerning symptoms, it is important to seek medical advice. A healthcare provider can perform a blood test for pregnancy, which is more sensitive than home urine tests, and can also evaluate other potential causes for your delayed period.
