Is penile development normal?
Hello, Doctor: I would like to ask about whether my penis development is normal.
In March of this year, I underwent microscopic surgery for varicocele due to left testicular atrophy, while the right testicle is normal.
I occasionally experience a feeling of heaviness and discomfort after intense exercise.
I have the following questions:
A: Conservatively estimated, my erect penis length is 14 cm and width is 3.5 cm.
All secondary sexual characteristics are normal.
I would like to know if the size of my penis is considered normal.
Although the doctor told me my size is normal, I have seen that my father's penis is quite large when not erect, so I wonder if the varicocele has caused some atrophy of the left testicle (which measures 2.6 cm, while the right measures 3.5 cm), resulting in poor development of the penis.
Even though the right testicle is normal, I am unsure if the varicocele developed during puberty.
I have a considerable amount of leg hair, and it is dense.
I have experienced voice changes and have an Adam's apple, and I also have ample armpit and pubic hair.
I have no issues engaging in sexual activity with my girlfriend.
I feel that my penis is not as large as my brother's or father's, which makes me question whether I have developmental issues.
Can you clarify this for me, Doctor?
B: If there is developmental deficiency, is there any chance for correction? I am worried that I may have been unaware of my varicocele during childhood, and it was only in the last couple of years that I noticed discomfort after exercising.
I fear that this may have affected my penis development during puberty.
If so, I would really like to know if there are any methods to remedy this.
C: I just turned 20 years old.
Is there a chance for the atrophied testicle to grow back?

Hello: 1.
The size of the penis and testicles is primarily determined by genetics, with some influence from environmental factors.
There is little chance of significant change by the age of 20.
As for varicocele, it may affect semen quality, but other impacts are minimal.
2.
The chances are low; regular exercise, adequate sleep, and a balanced diet are recommended.
3.
I don't think so, but you can consult your surgeon.
Wishing you good health.

When it comes to concerns about penis development and size, it's important to understand that there is a wide range of what is considered "normal." Based on the measurements you provided—14 cm in length and 3.5 cm in width when erect—these dimensions fall within the average range for adult males. Studies indicate that the average erect penis size is typically around 12.9 to 15 cm in length and 11.5 cm in circumference. Therefore, your measurements are not unusual and do not indicate any developmental issues.
Regarding your concerns about testicular size and the impact of varicocele (the condition you mentioned that led to your surgery), it is known that varicoceles can affect testicular development. The left testicle is often more affected due to anatomical reasons, and it is not uncommon for individuals with a varicocele to experience some degree of testicular atrophy. However, the right testicle appears to be normal in size, which is a positive sign.
You mentioned that you have secondary sexual characteristics such as body hair, a deep voice, and normal sexual function with your girlfriend, which are all indicators that your testosterone levels and overall sexual development are likely normal. The presence of these characteristics suggests that your body has undergone the necessary changes associated with puberty, despite your concerns about penis size.
As for your worries about whether the varicocele could have caused any long-term effects on your penis size or development, it is unlikely that a varicocele would directly affect the size of the penis itself. The penis size is primarily determined by genetic factors and hormonal influences during puberty. If you are experiencing discomfort after vigorous exercise, it may be worth discussing this with your healthcare provider to ensure that there are no complications from your previous surgery.
Regarding your questions about potential remedies for perceived developmental issues, it's important to note that there are no medically approved methods to increase penis size significantly. Many products and procedures marketed for this purpose are often ineffective and can even be harmful. If you are concerned about your testicular size, it is best to consult with a urologist who can provide personalized advice and evaluate your specific situation.
Lastly, concerning the possibility of testicular growth after the age of 20, it is generally accepted that testicular size stabilizes after puberty. While some changes may occur, significant growth is unlikely. However, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise and a balanced diet, can support overall reproductive health.
In summary, your penis size appears to be within the normal range, and while the varicocele may have affected your left testicle, it does not seem to have impacted your overall sexual development. If you have ongoing concerns or experience discomfort, it is advisable to seek further evaluation from a healthcare professional. Remember, open communication with your doctor can help alleviate anxiety and provide clarity on your health concerns.
