Issues related to occlusal splints?

Hello, Doctor.
I would like to ask you about something.
Yesterday, while cleaning my occlusal splint, it accidentally fell into the sink.
I was worried about it getting dirty and the possibility of bacterial infection (I previously had a bacterial infection that caused my gums to become red, swollen, and painful).
Therefore, I squeezed some toothpaste onto a toothbrush and brushed it, then rinsed it with clean water.
I'm not sure if using toothpaste was the right approach, and I'm concerned that it may not be completely clean.
After this cleaning, can I wear it, or should I use a denture cleaning tablet like Polident to clean it before wearing it? I have never used denture cleaning tablets before; do I just soak it and then rinse it with water? Thank you for your response, Doctor.

Hello, thank you for your message.
Generally speaking, we do not recommend using toothpaste to clean dentures or occlusal splints, as it can cause scratches.
If you have concerns about cleaning, you can soak the dentures in denture cleaning tablets and then rinse them thoroughly with cold water.
Thank you! Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

When it comes to properly caring for your dental bite guard, it's essential to maintain cleanliness to prevent bacterial growth and ensure your oral health. Here are some detailed tips and considerations for cleaning and caring for your bite guard.

Cleaning Your Bite Guard
1. Daily Rinse: After each use, rinse your bite guard under lukewarm water. This helps remove saliva and any food particles that may have accumulated.

2. Gentle Cleaning: While using toothpaste and a toothbrush can seem like a good idea, it is generally not recommended for cleaning dental appliances. Toothpaste can be abrasive and may scratch the surface of the bite guard, creating micro-abrasions where bacteria can thrive. Instead, use a soft-bristled toothbrush without toothpaste or a gentle soap solution to clean it.

3. Use of Denture Cleaners: It is advisable to use a specialized denture cleaner or effervescent cleaning tablets designed for dental appliances. These products are formulated to effectively remove plaque and bacteria without damaging the material of your bite guard. Simply dissolve the tablet in water and soak your bite guard according to the instructions on the packaging.

4. Avoid Hot Water: Never use hot water to clean your bite guard, as it can warp the material. Always stick to lukewarm or cool water.

5. Thorough Rinsing: After cleaning, ensure you rinse the bite guard thoroughly with water to remove any cleaning solution or residue before placing it back in your mouth.

Concerns About Bacterial Infection
Given your previous experience with bacterial infections leading to gum inflammation, it's understandable to be cautious. If your bite guard fell into the sink, it may have come into contact with bacteria present in that environment. Therefore, it is crucial to clean it properly before using it again.

If you have already used toothpaste and rinsed it, you should still consider using a denture cleaner for an extra layer of cleanliness. This will help ensure that any remaining bacteria are eliminated.

When to Replace Your Bite Guard
Keep an eye on the condition of your bite guard. If you notice any signs of wear, such as cracks or significant discoloration, it may be time to replace it. A damaged bite guard can be less effective and may harbor bacteria.

Regular Dental Check-ups
Regular visits to your dentist are essential for maintaining oral health, especially if you have had issues with gum inflammation in the past. Your dentist can provide personalized advice on the care of your bite guard and check for any signs of wear or damage.

Conclusion
In summary, while using toothpaste to clean your bite guard may seem convenient, it is not the best practice. Instead, opt for gentle cleaning methods and specialized denture cleaners. Always ensure thorough rinsing and avoid using hot water. If you have any doubts about the cleanliness of your bite guard after an incident, it is wise to take extra precautions by using a denture cleaner before wearing it again. Regular dental check-ups will also help you maintain optimal oral health and address any concerns promptly.
