Urological Issues After Rubber Band Ligation for Hemorrhoids - Urology

Severe urinary tract issues?

1.
I would like to first ask if rubber band ligation for internal hemorrhoids can affect the urethra or penile issues?
2.
The problem started in April of this year: Initially, when I discovered I had hemorrhoids, I also noticed that my penis was not functioning properly.
I thought it might be related to the hemorrhoids, so I underwent rubber band ligation for the internal hemorrhoids.
At first, the next day, I found that my penis was able to achieve normal erections and hardness, and I could ejaculate normally.
However, after the hemorrhoids fell off, I started experiencing issues again with my penis not functioning properly.
This has led to a series of problems that remain unresolved to this day.
My penis feels shorter than before, and it becomes soft just a few minutes after an erection.
I also experience premature ejaculation, and sometimes there is pain after ejaculation.
Additionally, urination can be painful, and I feel like my urine stream is weaker, with a sensation of residual urine in my abdomen.
Morning erections have become infrequent, and I have experienced lower back pain a few times.
I have a habit of visiting traditional Chinese medicine practitioners, but the results have been inconsistent.
As of November, my issues are still unresolved, and I am very distressed.
I used to have a very normal sexual function, being able to have intercourse once or twice a day with strong and lasting erections, and my urination was normal.
What could have caused such a sudden decline in my sexual health? I am considering switching to a Western medicine urology specialist to see if there are any answers.

Hemorrhoids are not related to sexual function.
If you have issues with sexual function, please visit a urology clinic.

It sounds like you are experiencing a complex set of symptoms following rubber band ligation for hemorrhoids, and it’s understandable that you are feeling concerned and frustrated. Let’s break down your questions and symptoms to provide some clarity.

1. Impact of Rubber Band Ligation on Urological Function: Rubber band ligation is a common procedure used to treat hemorrhoids, particularly internal hemorrhoids. The procedure involves placing a rubber band around the base of the hemorrhoid to cut off its blood supply, causing it to shrink and eventually fall off. Generally, this procedure is localized to the rectal area and should not directly affect the urinary tract or penile function. However, the body’s response to pain, inflammation, or anxiety related to the procedure can sometimes lead to temporary changes in sexual function or urinary symptoms.

2. Your Symptoms: You mentioned that since the procedure, you have experienced a range of symptoms including erectile dysfunction, changes in ejaculation, penile size perception, and urinary discomfort. These symptoms can be distressing and may stem from several factors:
- Psychological Factors: Anxiety and stress related to your health can significantly impact sexual function. Concerns about your body and performance can lead to a cycle of anxiety that exacerbates the problem.

- Physical Factors: If there was any trauma or nerve irritation during the ligation procedure, it could potentially lead to temporary changes in erectile function. Additionally, if you have been experiencing pain or discomfort in the pelvic region, this could also affect sexual performance.

- Underlying Conditions: Conditions such as pelvic floor dysfunction, hormonal imbalances, or vascular issues can also contribute to erectile dysfunction and changes in urinary function.
3. Next Steps: Given the persistence of your symptoms and the impact they are having on your quality of life, it is advisable to consult a urologist. A urologist can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include:
- Physical Examination: Assessing for any physical abnormalities or signs of trauma.

- Blood Tests: Checking hormone levels, including testosterone, which can influence sexual function.

- Urinalysis: To rule out any urinary tract infections or other issues.

- Imaging Studies: If necessary, imaging studies can help assess the pelvic region for any structural issues.

4. Considerations for Treatment: Depending on the findings, treatment options may include:
- Counseling or Therapy: If psychological factors are contributing to your symptoms, therapy can be beneficial.

- Medications: There are medications available that can help with erectile dysfunction and urinary symptoms.

- Lifestyle Modifications: Improving diet, exercise, and managing stress can also have a positive impact on sexual and urinary health.

In summary, while rubber band ligation for hemorrhoids is not typically associated with urological issues, the symptoms you are experiencing could be multifactorial. It is important to seek a comprehensive evaluation from a urologist who can help identify the underlying causes and develop an appropriate treatment plan. Your concerns are valid, and addressing them with a specialist will provide you with the best chance for recovery and improved quality of life.
