Strange sensations in the ear?

I feel a sensation of bubbles in my ear; it retracts when I inhale, but sometimes a small movement causes that sensation to reappear.

Peter, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2017/11/14

Dr. Li Jiaxuan reply Otolaryngology

It may be an Eustachian tube disorder.
It is recommended to undergo an otolaryngology consultation and tympanometry with audiometry.
Wishing you good health.

Understanding unusual ear sensations can be quite perplexing, especially when they manifest as feelings of fullness, popping, or bubbling within the ear. These sensations can arise from various underlying causes, and it's essential to explore them to determine the most appropriate course of action.

One common cause of these sensations is Eustachian tube dysfunction. The Eustachian tube connects the middle ear to the back of the throat and helps equalize pressure in the ear. When this tube becomes blocked or fails to open properly, it can lead to a feeling of fullness or pressure in the ear, often described as a "bubbling" sensation. This dysfunction can occur due to allergies, colds, sinus infections, or changes in altitude, such as during air travel or driving through mountains.

Another potential cause could be the presence of earwax buildup. Excessive earwax can trap air and moisture in the ear canal, leading to unusual sensations. While earwax is a natural substance that protects the ear, too much of it can cause discomfort and even affect hearing. If you suspect earwax buildup, it may be beneficial to consult a healthcare professional for safe removal.

In some cases, muscle spasms in the middle ear can also create unusual sounds or sensations. The muscles in the ear can contract involuntarily, leading to a feeling of popping or bubbling. This is often harmless and may resolve on its own, but if it persists, further evaluation may be necessary.

Additionally, changes in atmospheric pressure, such as during flying or scuba diving, can lead to sensations of fullness and popping in the ears. This is typically temporary and resolves as the pressure equalizes. However, if you experience significant discomfort or if the sensations persist, it is advisable to seek medical attention.

Stress and anxiety can also contribute to unusual ear sensations. Tension in the jaw or neck can lead to referred sensations in the ear, making it feel as though there is something unusual happening inside. Practicing relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing or mindfulness, may help alleviate these sensations if they are stress-related.

If you are experiencing these sensations frequently or if they are accompanied by other symptoms such as pain, hearing loss, or dizziness, it is crucial to consult with an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist. They can perform a thorough examination, including hearing tests and imaging studies if necessary, to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms.

In summary, unusual ear sensations can stem from various causes, including Eustachian tube dysfunction, earwax buildup, muscle spasms, pressure changes, or stress. While some of these issues may resolve on their own, persistent or bothersome symptoms warrant a visit to a healthcare professional for proper evaluation and treatment. Taking proactive steps to address these sensations can help ensure your ear health and overall well-being.
