Breast issues
Hello, doctor.
I have a question that I hope you can help me with.
After taking a shower yesterday, I suddenly noticed a small white spot on the areola of my breast, which looks similar to a pimple.
I didn't touch it, and when I checked in the morning, it appeared to be somewhat like a zit.
Yesterday, it seemed to have a bit of blood, but today it looks slightly smaller than it did yesterday.
I haven't applied any medication or squeezed it, and I would like to know if it will resolve on its own.
I'm concerned that if I squeeze it, it might become inflamed.
What could be the reason for this sudden appearance? Thank you for your response, doctor.

Yesterday after taking a shower, I suddenly noticed a small white bump on my areola that looked somewhat like a pimple.
I didn't touch it.
When I checked in the morning, it resembled a small acne lesion, and it appeared slightly bloody yesterday.
Today, it seems a bit smaller than yesterday.
I haven't applied any medication or squeezed it, as I'm concerned it might become inflamed.
I'm wondering if it will resolve on its own.
What could have caused this sudden appearance? Answer: A small white bump on the areola that appears slightly bloody should be evaluated by a physician for examination.

More Info
When it comes to unusual growths on the breast, such as the small white bump you described on your areola, it’s important to approach the situation with caution and awareness. The bump you are experiencing could be a variety of things, including a clogged pore, a sebaceous cyst, or even a small pimple. Here’s a breakdown of what you might be dealing with and what steps you can take.
Possible Causes
1. Sebaceous Cyst: These are non-cancerous lumps that can occur when a sebaceous gland becomes blocked. They are usually painless and can sometimes become inflamed or infected, leading to redness and discomfort.
2. Folliculitis: This is an inflammation of the hair follicles, often caused by bacteria or irritation. It can appear as small red or white bumps and may resemble pimples.
3. Pimple or Acne: Just like on other parts of the body, acne can occur on the breast area, particularly if there is excess oil or sweat.
4. Montgomery Glands: These are small glands located on the areola that can sometimes become more prominent or inflamed, leading to small bumps.
5. Infection: If the bump is painful, red, or has pus, it could indicate an infection that may require medical attention.
What to Do
1. Avoid Picking or Squeezing: As you mentioned, it’s wise not to squeeze or pick at the bump. Doing so can lead to inflammation, infection, or scarring. It’s best to let it be and observe any changes.
2. Keep the Area Clean: Gently wash the area with mild soap and water. Avoid harsh scrubs or products that could irritate the skin further.
3. Monitor Changes: Keep an eye on the bump. If it shrinks and disappears, it was likely a minor issue. However, if it grows, becomes painful, or shows signs of infection (such as increased redness, warmth, or pus), you should seek medical attention.
4. Consult a Healthcare Provider: If the bump does not resolve on its own within a week or two, or if you have any concerns about its appearance or symptoms, it’s advisable to consult a healthcare provider. They can perform a physical examination and, if necessary, conduct further tests to determine the nature of the growth.
When to Seek Immediate Care
If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:
- Severe pain in the area
- Rapid growth of the bump
- Signs of infection (fever, increased redness, warmth, or pus)
- Changes in the breast tissue, such as unusual discharge or changes in shape
Conclusion
In summary, while it’s common to experience minor growths or changes in the breast area, it’s essential to monitor these changes and avoid self-treatment that could exacerbate the issue. Keeping the area clean and observing any changes is a good first step. If the bump persists or worsens, consulting a healthcare provider is the best course of action to ensure your health and peace of mind. Remember, breast health is an important aspect of overall well-being, and being proactive about any changes is key to maintaining it.
