Does taking antidepressants (SSRIs) affect cognition and impair memory?

I am still a high school student and I have severe autonomic nervous system dysfunction.
I have tried traditional Chinese medicine, but it hasn't worked.
I am considering trying Western medicine, but I found out that the treatment for this condition involves antidepressants.
Although I am unwell, I still need to take exams.
I read online that some people experienced forgetfulness and often got lost after taking these medications, specifically SSRIs or SNRIs, which are serotonin medications.
Although memory impairment is not listed as a side effect of these drugs, I still feel anxious and concerned that my grades might drop after taking them.
What should I do?

The concern about the effects of SSRIs (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) and SNRIs (Serotonin-Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors) on cognitive function and memory, especially in teenagers, is a valid one. As a high school student dealing with severe autonomic nervous system dysregulation, it's understandable to be apprehensive about starting a new medication, particularly when it comes to your academic performance.

Firstly, it's important to clarify that SSRIs and SNRIs are primarily prescribed to treat depression and anxiety disorders. They work by increasing the levels of serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain, which can help improve mood and alleviate symptoms of anxiety. While some individuals report experiencing cognitive side effects, such as forgetfulness or difficulty concentrating, research has not consistently shown that these medications cause significant long-term cognitive impairment or memory loss.

In fact, many studies indicate that untreated depression and anxiety can have a more detrimental effect on cognitive function than the medications used to treat them. Depression itself can lead to difficulties with concentration, memory, and decision-making, which can be particularly challenging for students who need to perform academically. Therefore, addressing the underlying mental health issues with appropriate medication may actually help improve cognitive function over time.

It's also worth noting that the experience of cognitive side effects can vary widely among individuals. Some people may feel a temporary fogginess or difficulty focusing when they first start taking SSRIs or SNRIs, but these effects often diminish as the body adjusts to the medication. If you do experience any cognitive difficulties, it’s crucial to communicate openly with your healthcare provider. They can help monitor your symptoms and make any necessary adjustments to your treatment plan.

In terms of your academic performance, it’s essential to prioritize your mental health. If you find that your anxiety or depression is interfering with your ability to study or take exams, addressing these issues with medication could ultimately lead to better academic outcomes. Additionally, consider incorporating non-pharmacological strategies to support your cognitive function, such as regular exercise, a balanced diet, adequate sleep, and mindfulness practices. These lifestyle changes can enhance your overall well-being and cognitive performance.

Lastly, if you are still concerned about the potential impact of SSRIs or SNRIs on your memory and cognitive function, it may be beneficial to seek a second opinion from another healthcare professional. They can provide further insights and help you weigh the risks and benefits of starting medication.

In summary, while concerns about cognitive side effects from SSRIs and SNRIs are understandable, the potential benefits of treating your mental health conditions often outweigh the risks. Open communication with your healthcare provider, along with supportive lifestyle changes, can help you navigate this challenging time while maintaining your academic performance. Remember, taking care of your mental health is a crucial step towards achieving your goals in school and beyond.
