Red, broken skin on the glans?

Hello, as mentioned, I recently noticed that the left half of my glans is red, and there seems to be a spot that feels like it has broken skin, which is also red, but it doesn't hurt at all.
The right half has no similar symptoms.
What could this issue be? Thank you.

Beter, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2017/12/18

Hello: If it is not a friction abrasion, it could be an infection.
You should seek medical attention.
In the meantime, keep the area clean and dry, avoid using soap, and rinse with clean water before patting it dry.

More Info

The symptoms you are describing, specifically the redness and irritation on one side of the glans (the head of the penis), along with a sensation of broken skin, can be attributed to several potential causes. It’s important to approach this issue with a clear understanding of the possible conditions and their implications.

Potential Causes
1. Irritation or Allergic Reaction: One of the most common causes of localized redness and irritation is an allergic reaction or irritation from soaps, lotions, or other personal care products. If you have recently changed any products that come into contact with the genital area, this could be a likely cause.

2. Infection: Infections, particularly fungal infections like candidiasis (yeast infection), can cause redness and irritation. Bacterial infections, including sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as herpes or gonorrhea, can also present with similar symptoms. However, STIs typically come with additional symptoms such as pain, discharge, or sores.

3. Dermatitis: Contact dermatitis, which is an inflammation of the skin caused by direct contact with an irritant or allergen, can lead to redness and irritation. This can occur due to friction, moisture, or exposure to irritants.

4. Balanitis: This is an inflammation of the glans, which can be caused by poor hygiene, infections, or skin conditions. Balanitis can lead to redness, swelling, and sometimes pain or discomfort.

5. Psoriasis or Other Skin Conditions: Conditions like psoriasis can also affect the genital area, leading to red patches and irritation. This is less common but still a possibility.

Recommendations for Management
1. Maintain Hygiene: Ensure that you are keeping the area clean and dry. Use mild, unscented soap and avoid harsh chemicals or products that could irritate the skin.

2. Avoid Irritants: If you suspect that a product may be causing the irritation, discontinue its use. This includes soaps, lotions, or even certain fabrics that may cause friction.

3. Topical Treatments: Over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream can help reduce inflammation and irritation. However, it’s best to consult with a healthcare provider before applying any medication.

4. Monitor Symptoms: Keep an eye on the symptoms. If the redness persists, worsens, or if you develop additional symptoms such as pain, discharge, or fever, it is crucial to seek medical attention.

5. Consult a Healthcare Provider: Given that the symptoms are localized and you have not experienced pain, it may not be an emergency, but it is still advisable to consult a healthcare provider for a proper diagnosis. They may perform a physical examination and possibly recommend tests to rule out infections or other conditions.

Conclusion
While the symptoms you are experiencing may not be immediately alarming, they warrant attention to ensure that they do not progress into a more serious condition. Early intervention can often lead to better outcomes, especially if an infection or other treatable condition is present. Remember, it’s always best to err on the side of caution when it comes to health concerns, particularly those involving sensitive areas of the body.
