Retinal issues?
Hello Doctor: I underwent retinal laser treatment on November 29, and the doctor advised me to return for a follow-up in a month.
I would like to ask you: on the morning of December 13, after I woke up, I noticed that my right eye near the inner corner was experiencing a wavy distortion (similar to seeing things through a water surface, where a small portion of my visual field appears to be shaking).
This occurs almost every morning when I wake up and when I go up and down the stairs, but it lasts no more than a minute.
Is this a normal condition after the laser treatment? Thank you.

Generally, such situations do not occur after laser treatment.
It is recommended that you consult the physician who performed the procedure during your follow-up visit.

After undergoing retinal laser surgery, it is not uncommon for patients to experience a variety of visual disturbances and discomforts as part of the recovery process. Your description of seeing a "water ripple" effect in your vision, particularly upon waking or during certain movements, raises some important considerations.
Firstly, the phenomenon you are experiencing could be attributed to a few potential causes. One possibility is that it is related to the vitreous gel within the eye. After laser surgery, the vitreous may undergo changes, and these changes can lead to visual disturbances such as floaters or the sensation of seeing waves or ripples. This is often due to the vitreous pulling away from the retina, which can happen naturally with age or as a result of surgical intervention.
Another consideration is that the visual disturbances you are experiencing could be linked to the healing process of the retina itself. After laser treatment, the retina may still be in a state of adjustment as it heals, and this can lead to temporary visual anomalies. The fact that these symptoms occur primarily in the morning or during specific movements suggests that they may be related to changes in eye pressure or fluid dynamics within the eye as you change positions.
It is also important to note that while some visual disturbances can be normal post-surgery, any persistent or worsening symptoms should be evaluated by your ophthalmologist. Symptoms such as flashes of light, significant changes in vision, or a sudden increase in floaters could indicate complications that require immediate attention.
In your case, since the water ripple effect does not last more than a minute and seems to occur under specific circumstances, it may be a benign post-operative symptom. However, it is crucial to maintain open communication with your healthcare provider. You mentioned that your follow-up appointment is scheduled for a month after your surgery. It would be wise to document your symptoms and discuss them during that visit. Your doctor will be able to assess your eye health more thoroughly and determine if any additional interventions are necessary.
In summary, while some visual disturbances can be expected after retinal laser surgery, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If you notice any changes in the frequency, duration, or nature of your symptoms, or if you experience any new symptoms, do not hesitate to reach out to your ophthalmologist for further evaluation. Your eye health is paramount, and timely intervention can help prevent potential complications.
