Eating too much lamb hot pot can lead to a recurrence of internal hemorrhoids?
Hello, Doctor.
Today, I experienced some difficulty with bowel movements and later noticed bleeding.
There was a significant amount of bright red blood on the toilet paper and in the stool (although the stool itself appeared normal, and I don't have any specific pain).
Due to the New Year celebrations over the past couple of days, I consumed a lot of lamb hot pot (I've heard this can easily trigger a rupture of internal hemorrhoids), and I've also been staying up late, so I suspect this might have caused a recurrence of my internal hemorrhoids.
I recall having similar bleeding episodes one or two years ago, and after examination, I was diagnosed with mild internal hemorrhoids, but it gradually resolved (at least I haven't had any noticeable bleeding like today in the past six months).
Additionally, I have undergone a colonoscopy, gastroscopy, and abdominal ultrasound in the past two years, all of which were normal.
In summary, given this situation, should I just monitor and take care of myself, as long as the bleeding doesn't persist? Or do I need to use medication (like suppositories) or visit a clinic?

Excessive consumption of certain foods, such as lamb hot pot, can indeed trigger flare-ups of hemorrhoids, particularly in individuals who are already predisposed to this condition. Hemorrhoids, or piles, are swollen veins in the lower rectum and anus that can cause discomfort, pain, and bleeding. The symptoms you describe—bright red blood on toilet paper and in your stool—are common indicators of hemorrhoidal bleeding, especially if the stool itself appears normal.
When you consume a heavy, rich diet, particularly one high in fat and low in fiber, it can lead to constipation. Straining during bowel movements can exacerbate hemorrhoids, leading to increased pressure and potential rupture of the swollen veins, resulting in bleeding. Additionally, late nights and irregular sleep patterns can affect your digestive health, potentially leading to gastrointestinal disturbances that may contribute to constipation or diarrhea.
Given your history of mild internal hemorrhoids and the recent dietary indulgence, it is reasonable to suspect that your current symptoms may be related to the flare-up of these hemorrhoids. However, since you have had recent gastrointestinal evaluations, including a colonoscopy and abdominal ultrasound, which were normal, it is less likely that there is a more serious underlying condition.
In terms of management, if the bleeding is minimal and not accompanied by significant pain or other alarming symptoms (such as severe abdominal pain, dizziness, or changes in bowel habits), you may consider self-care measures. These can include:
1. Dietary Adjustments: Increase your fiber intake by consuming more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. This can help soften your stool and reduce straining during bowel movements.
2. Hydration: Drink plenty of water to help prevent constipation.
3. Warm Baths: Soaking in a warm bath can provide relief from discomfort and help reduce inflammation.
4. Over-the-Counter Treatments: You might consider using topical treatments or suppositories designed for hemorrhoids, which can help alleviate symptoms and promote healing.
5. Rest: Ensure you get adequate rest and avoid prolonged sitting or standing, which can exacerbate hemorrhoidal symptoms.
If the bleeding persists, increases in frequency, or if you experience significant pain, it would be prudent to consult a healthcare provider. They may recommend further evaluation or treatment options, including prescription medications or procedures to address the hemorrhoids.
In summary, while your recent dietary choices may have contributed to your current symptoms, careful monitoring and self-care can often manage mild flare-ups. However, do not hesitate to seek medical advice if your symptoms do not improve or worsen. Regular follow-ups with your healthcare provider are essential, especially if you have a history of gastrointestinal issues.
