Belching occurs after drinking water and eating enough?
Hello, I would like to ask what it means if I burp immediately within 30 seconds after eating and drinking water? Additionally, I experience rumbling sounds in my abdomen when lying flat, and I feel a dull pain in the upper left abdomen when walking after eating, but it only lasts for about 5 minutes.
I hope to get some answers.
Thank you.

Hello: The discomfort in the upper left abdomen may be related to the stomach or the colon at the splenic flexure.
It is advisable to consult a gastroenterologist to determine the cause.
Please pay attention to a light diet, monitor your bowel movements, and avoid overeating.

Burping and abdominal sounds after eating and drinking can be attributed to various physiological processes and conditions. When you eat or drink, especially if you do so quickly or consume carbonated beverages, you may swallow air, which can lead to burping. This is a normal response of the body to release excess air from the stomach. The act of burping is also a way for the body to relieve pressure that builds up in the stomach, which can occur after consuming food or liquids.
The sounds you hear from your abdomen, often referred to as "borborygmi," are typically the result of the movement of gas and fluids through the intestines. This is a normal part of digestion, as your gastrointestinal (GI) tract works to break down food and move it along. However, if these sounds are accompanied by discomfort or pain, it may indicate an underlying issue.
In your case, experiencing burping shortly after eating and drinking, along with abdominal sounds and transient pain in the left upper abdomen, could be related to several factors:
1. Aerophagia: This is the medical term for swallowing air, which can occur if you eat too quickly, talk while eating, or consume carbonated drinks. The swallowed air can lead to burping and abdominal sounds as it moves through the digestive tract.
2. Gastric Distension: Eating a large meal can cause the stomach to expand, leading to pressure and discomfort. This distension can also trigger the release of gas, resulting in burping.
3. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): If you experience heartburn or acid reflux along with burping, it may indicate GERD, where stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, causing discomfort.
4. Food Intolerance or Sensitivity: Certain foods can cause gas and bloating, especially if you have an intolerance to them (e.g., lactose intolerance, gluten sensitivity). This can lead to increased gas production and discomfort.
5. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS): This functional GI disorder can cause symptoms like bloating, gas, and abdominal pain. The symptoms can vary widely among individuals and may be triggered by certain foods or stress.
6. Transient Pain: The brief pain you experience in your left upper abdomen after eating could be related to the stretching of the stomach or irritation of the gastric lining. If the pain is sharp or persistent, it may warrant further investigation.
Given that the pain lasts only a few minutes and resolves on its own, it may not be a cause for immediate concern. However, if you notice any of the following, it would be advisable to seek medical attention:
- Persistent or worsening abdominal pain
- Significant changes in bowel habits (diarrhea, constipation)
- Unexplained weight loss
- Blood in stools or vomit
- Severe bloating or discomfort
In summary, while burping and abdominal sounds after eating are often normal, they can also indicate underlying digestive issues. If these symptoms persist or are accompanied by other concerning signs, it would be wise to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation and appropriate management. Keeping a food diary to track what you eat and any associated symptoms may also help identify potential triggers.
