Dietary Issues in Lymphoma

Hello Doctor: Currently, I have a suspected swollen lymph node on the right side of my jaw (it is not visible on the surface, only palpable when pressed).
Sometimes it hurts and sometimes it doesn't; it feels soft.
I consulted an ENT clinic, and they suspected it might be due to tonsillitis, prescribing Western medicine for a week, but there was no reduction in swelling.
Later, I went to a Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner, who only prescribed a cold remedy, which made me quite worried.
After taking the Chinese medicine for two days, I went to the ENT department at Tri-Service General Hospital (the doctor palpated and estimated it to be about 1 to 1.5 cm).
They mentioned that it might not improve with medication and arranged for an ultrasound on February 8.
Since the ultrasound report takes a week to come out, and I had already returned to Pingtung, I would have to wait until after the New Year to return to Tri-Service General Hospital.
The previous doctors all indicated that the swelling might be due to inflammation from a cold, and advised me to strictly control my diet, eating light and avoiding spicy and fried foods, which I have been following.
However, since the medication has not been effective, can I eat slightly heavier flavored foods during the New Year period (after all, there are festive dishes)?

Hello, a definitive diagnosis still requires reviewing the ultrasound report at Tri-Service General Hospital.
Dietary recommendations should still focus on controlling intake, minimizing spicy and fried foods.
During the New Year period, it should be acceptable to indulge in slightly heavier flavors, but it is advised to drink plenty of water and rinse your mouth afterward.
Wishing you peace, health, and well-being.
Sincerely, Dr.
Cheng Jue-Yi, Director of the Department of Otolaryngology, Taoyuan Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

When it comes to dietary concerns related to lymph node swelling, particularly in the context of your situation with suspected inflammation of the tonsils, it is crucial to understand the underlying causes and how diet can play a role in managing symptoms. Lymph node swelling can occur due to various reasons, including infections, inflammation, or even more serious conditions. In your case, the medical professionals you consulted have suggested that the swelling may be related to a respiratory infection, which is common during colder months.

Dietary management during this time is essential. The recommendation to consume a light diet while avoiding spicy, oily, and fried foods is sound advice. These types of foods can exacerbate inflammation and may irritate the throat, especially if you are experiencing any discomfort. Instead, focus on a diet rich in whole foods, including fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. Foods high in antioxidants, such as berries, leafy greens, and nuts, can help support your immune system and reduce inflammation.

Hydration is also critical. Drinking plenty of fluids, particularly water, herbal teas, and broths, can help keep your throat moist and may assist in reducing discomfort. If you enjoy soups, consider making them with anti-inflammatory ingredients like ginger, garlic, and turmeric, which can provide additional health benefits.

Regarding your concern about indulging in heavier foods during the festive season, it is understandable to want to enjoy traditional dishes. However, moderation is key. If you choose to partake in richer foods, try to balance them with lighter options throughout the day. For instance, if you have a heavier meal, consider having lighter snacks or meals before and after to maintain a balanced intake.
It's also important to listen to your body. If you notice that certain foods trigger discomfort or worsen your symptoms, it may be best to avoid them, even during celebrations. You might also want to consider discussing your dietary choices with a healthcare provider or a registered dietitian, especially if your symptoms persist or worsen.

In summary, while it is tempting to indulge during festive occasions, maintaining a balanced and health-conscious approach to your diet can help manage your lymph node swelling and overall health. Focus on anti-inflammatory foods, stay hydrated, and be mindful of your body's responses to different foods. If your symptoms do not improve or if you have further concerns, it is advisable to follow up with your healthcare provider for additional evaluation and guidance.
