Are you pregnant?

Doctor, I would like to confirm if I am pregnant.
My period started on December 24, but it was supposed to come on January 27 and hasn't arrived.
I had unprotected intercourse, and on February 1, I went to a hospital for a urine test, which showed one line.
I was given a medication to induce menstruation.
Since I was concerned about the accuracy, I went to another hospital on February 5 for another test, but it still showed one line.
The doctor prescribed me medication to induce my period.
Is it too early to test, or are the results inaccurate? I have breast tenderness but no signs of my period.
For the past couple of days, I have felt a bit uncomfortable in my stomach after eating and have had some nausea.
Is this due to pregnancy or gastrointestinal issues? The doctors have told me that there is an 80-90% chance that my period will not come, and this is the longest I have ever gone without it.

Ping, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2018/02/08

Dr. Huang Yiwen reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello Miss Ping: Based on your situation, I believe you are not pregnant.
You should be patient and wait.
Generally, after taking menstrual induction medication, you need to wait three to seven days for your period to arrive.
If you repeatedly visit the doctor and take menstrual induction medication, it may sometimes delay your expected menstruation.
I suggest you wait another week, and if your period still hasn't come, consult your doctor again.

To determine whether you are pregnant, it's essential to understand the timing and accuracy of pregnancy tests, as well as the symptoms that may indicate pregnancy. Based on your description, you have experienced a missed period, which can be a primary sign of pregnancy. However, there are several factors to consider.

Firstly, the timing of your pregnancy tests is crucial. Pregnancy tests, whether urine or blood tests, detect the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), which is produced shortly after a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining. Typically, hCG levels become detectable in urine about 14 days after conception, which is usually around the time of a missed period. Since your last menstrual period was on December 24 and you expected your next one on January 27, testing on February 1 may have been slightly early, especially if you ovulated later than expected or if conception occurred later in your cycle.

You mentioned that you received a negative result on both tests conducted on February 1 and February 5. If you are testing too early, the levels of hCG may not be high enough to be detected, leading to a false negative. Additionally, factors such as irregular cycles, stress, or hormonal imbalances can also affect the timing of your period and the accuracy of your tests.

Regarding your symptoms, breast tenderness (often described as "sore breasts" or "breast fullness") can be an early sign of pregnancy due to hormonal changes. However, it can also occur due to premenstrual syndrome (PMS) or other factors. The nausea and discomfort after eating could be related to pregnancy, but they could also indicate gastrointestinal issues, especially if you have a history of digestive problems.

Given that you have received negative pregnancy test results and have been prescribed medication to induce your period, it is possible that you are not pregnant. However, if your period does not arrive after taking the medication, or if you continue to experience symptoms that concern you, it would be wise to follow up with your healthcare provider. They may recommend a blood test, which is more sensitive than urine tests and can detect lower levels of hCG.

In summary, while the absence of your period and certain symptoms may suggest pregnancy, the negative test results indicate that you are likely not pregnant at this time. It is essential to give your body time to regulate, especially if you have recently experienced stress or changes in your routine. If your period does not return or if you have further concerns, consulting with your healthcare provider for additional testing or evaluation is advisable. They can provide personalized guidance based on your medical history and current symptoms.
