Missed menstruation with white discharge?

Hello doctor, my menstrual cycle last month was 40 days, whereas it was about 34 days before that.
I had intercourse on February 4th, and the app indicated that my period would arrive on February 14th.
It is now six days late.
During this time, I experienced breast tenderness, gastrointestinal discomfort, but currently, I have some white discharge.
Could you please advise whether this is more likely a sign of pregnancy or that my period has not yet arrived?

Cong, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2018/02/20

More Info

When it comes to missed periods and the presence of symptoms like breast tenderness, gastrointestinal discomfort, and white discharge, it can be quite confusing to determine whether you might be pregnant or if your menstrual cycle is simply delayed. Based on the information you've provided, let's break down the situation.

Firstly, it's important to note that a missed period can be caused by various factors, not just pregnancy. Stress, hormonal imbalances, changes in weight, and even certain medical conditions can lead to a delay in menstruation. Given that your cycle has varied from 34 to 40 days, it's possible that this month’s delay could be due to natural fluctuations in your cycle.

You mentioned that you had sexual intercourse on February 4th and that your app predicted your period would arrive on February 14th. Since you are now six days late, it is reasonable to consider the possibility of pregnancy, especially since you have experienced symptoms commonly associated with early pregnancy, such as breast tenderness and gastrointestinal issues.

The presence of white discharge can also be indicative of pregnancy. During early pregnancy, many women experience increased vaginal discharge due to hormonal changes. However, this symptom alone is not definitive for pregnancy, as it can also occur in the lead-up to menstruation or due to other factors such as ovulation or infections.

Given that you are experiencing a combination of symptoms and a missed period, the most reliable way to determine if you are pregnant is to take a home pregnancy test. These tests are designed to detect the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which is produced shortly after a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining. For the most accurate results, it is recommended to take the test after your missed period, as this allows hCG levels to rise sufficiently for detection.

If you have already taken a pregnancy test and it was negative, it may still be too early to detect pregnancy, especially if you ovulated later than expected. If your period does not arrive within a week or if you continue to experience symptoms, it would be advisable to consult with a healthcare provider. They can perform a blood test, which is more sensitive than home tests, and can provide a clearer picture of your hormonal levels.

In summary, while the symptoms you are experiencing could suggest pregnancy, they are not definitive. The best course of action is to take a home pregnancy test if you haven't already, and if the result is negative and your period still does not arrive, seek medical advice for further evaluation. This will help rule out any underlying issues and provide you with peace of mind regarding your reproductive health.

1. You can take a pregnancy test. Increased vaginal discharge and vaginal inflammation can indirectly affect the regularity of your menstrual cycle. 2. Anal intercourse cannot result in pregnancy.
