Missed Period: Could It Be Pregnancy or Vaginal Infection? - Obstetrics and Gynecology

Is it a miscarriage? Acupuncture for menstrual regulation?

Hello Doctor, I would like to inquire about my missed period.
It has been over a month, almost two months, since my last menstrual cycle.
I visited a gynecologist who performed four pregnancy tests, all of which were negative.
I also received an injection to induce menstruation, but my period still hasn't arrived, and I have white discharge.
Could this be a sign of pregnancy, or is it possible that I have a vaginal infection that is causing my missed period?

Tangguo, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2024/06/17

Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, it's normal to expect your period to arrive within a week after receiving the menstrual induction injection.
If it doesn't come after that time, it's advisable to return to the obstetrics and gynecology department for a check-up.
Wishing you good health.

More Info

When experiencing a missed period, especially after a significant delay of one to two months, it is understandable to be concerned about the possibility of pregnancy or other underlying issues such as a vaginal infection. Based on the information provided, there are several factors to consider.

Firstly, the fact that you have taken multiple pregnancy tests and all have returned negative results (indicated by the presence of only one line) suggests that pregnancy is unlikely. Home pregnancy tests are generally quite accurate, especially when taken after a missed period. However, if you are still experiencing symptoms such as a missed period and unusual discharge, it is essential to explore other potential causes.

The white discharge you mentioned could be indicative of a few different conditions. One possibility is a vaginal infection, such as a yeast infection or bacterial vaginosis. These infections can sometimes cause changes in menstrual cycles, leading to missed periods. Symptoms of a yeast infection often include itching, irritation, and a thick, white discharge that resembles cottage cheese. Bacterial vaginosis, on the other hand, may result in a thin, grayish-white discharge with a fishy odor. If you suspect that you might have an infection, it is crucial to consult a healthcare provider for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Another potential cause for a missed period could be hormonal imbalances. Stress, significant weight changes, excessive exercise, or underlying health conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can disrupt the menstrual cycle. If you have experienced any significant lifestyle changes or stressors recently, these could be contributing factors.

In your case, since you have already consulted a gynecologist and received a shot to induce menstruation (often referred to as a "menstrual induction" shot), it is essential to follow up with your healthcare provider if your period does not return. They may recommend further testing, such as blood tests to check hormone levels or an ultrasound to assess your reproductive organs.

It is also worth noting that some women experience irregular periods for various reasons, and it is not uncommon for menstrual cycles to fluctuate. However, if you have missed two consecutive periods and are experiencing other symptoms, it is advisable to seek further evaluation.

In summary, while the negative pregnancy tests suggest that you are not pregnant, the missed period and white discharge warrant further investigation. It is crucial to consult with your healthcare provider to determine the underlying cause and receive appropriate treatment. They may perform additional tests to rule out infections or hormonal imbalances and provide guidance on how to manage your symptoms effectively. Remember, your health and well-being are paramount, and seeking medical advice is the best course of action in this situation.

1. You can take a pregnancy test. Increased vaginal discharge and vaginal inflammation can indirectly affect the regularity of your menstrual cycle. 2. Anal intercourse cannot result in pregnancy.
