The incision from the circumcision surgery has opened?
Hello Doctor, I underwent a circumcision on February 6th, but one of the wounds opened up about 1 cm.
I had a re-suturing procedure on February 19th, but yesterday the stitches came out along with the scab, causing the wound to open again.
Currently, the wound is covered by a layer of white-yellow hard scab.
I would like to ask the following questions regarding the situation if the wound is not re-sutured: 1.
Is there a possibility that it will not heal? 2.
Will the wound continue to widen? 3.
If it will heal, what is the approximate healing time for the wound? 4.
If the wound has a yellow-white hard scab, is it safe to engage in water activities? Thank you for your patience in reading this, and I appreciate your help, Doctor.

Hello: 1) No.
2) It's rare because it has been over two weeks.
3) A few weeks, but there will be a scar that will gradually fade.
4) Not at the moment, wishing you good health.

Complications after circumcision, particularly in the context of wound healing, can be concerning for patients. Based on your situation, where you experienced a wound dehiscence (the reopening of a wound) after your initial circumcision and subsequent re-suturing, it’s important to address your questions with care.
1. Will the wound not heal?
It is possible for a wound to heal even if it has opened up, but the healing process may be prolonged or complicated. The presence of a white or yellow crust (which is likely a scab or dried exudate) indicates that the body is attempting to heal itself. However, if the wound is not properly closed, there is a risk of infection or improper healing, which could lead to chronic non-healing wounds. If the wound remains open and does not show signs of healing, it may require further medical intervention.
2. Will the wound get larger?
If the wound is not properly managed, there is a risk that it could become larger, especially if there is tension on the edges of the wound or if there is any movement in the area. Additionally, if the wound becomes infected, it could lead to further tissue breakdown and an increase in size. It is crucial to keep the area clean and to avoid any activities that could stress the wound.
3. What is the healing time?
The healing time for a circumcision wound can vary significantly based on several factors, including the extent of the wound, the presence of infection, and individual healing capabilities. Generally, a circumcision wound can take anywhere from 2 to 6 weeks to heal, but if complications arise, such as reopening or infection, healing may take longer. Regular follow-up with your healthcare provider is essential to monitor the healing process.
4. Can I engage in water activities with a yellow-white scab?
It is generally advisable to avoid water activities (such as swimming) until the wound has fully healed. Water can introduce bacteria into the wound, increasing the risk of infection. If the wound is covered with a scab, it is a sign that the body is healing, but the scab also protects the underlying tissue. Engaging in water activities could disrupt the scab and delay healing. Always consult your healthcare provider for personalized advice based on the current state of your wound.
Additional Care Tips:
- Keep the area clean and dry: Gently clean the area with mild soap and water, and pat it dry. Avoid using harsh chemicals or scrubbing the area.
- Monitor for signs of infection: Look for increased redness, swelling, warmth, or discharge that is foul-smelling or unusual. If you notice any of these signs, seek medical attention promptly.
- Avoid tight clothing: Wear loose-fitting underwear and clothing to minimize friction and pressure on the healing area.
- Follow your doctor's advice: Adhere to any specific instructions given by your healthcare provider regarding wound care, medication, and follow-up appointments.
In conclusion, while complications can arise after circumcision, proper care and monitoring can significantly improve healing outcomes. If you have any concerns or if the wound does not seem to be healing, it is crucial to follow up with your healthcare provider for further evaluation and management.
