After meniscus surgery, the leg may experience persistent twitching or numbness?
Hello, doctor.
I recently had surgery for a torn meniscus and just got discharged a few days ago.
Since returning home, I've been experiencing numbness in my leg while sitting and lying down, and my left leg, which was operated on, always feels quite cold.
Is this a normal phenomenon? How long might it take for these symptoms to resolve? Thank you.

It is normal to gradually recover in the first one to two weeks after surgery.

After undergoing meniscus surgery, it's not uncommon to experience sensations such as numbness and coldness in the leg, particularly in the operated limb. These symptoms can be attributed to several factors related to the surgical procedure and the body's healing process.
Firstly, during surgery, the nerves surrounding the knee may be affected. Even though surgeons take great care to avoid nerve damage, some degree of irritation or inflammation can occur, leading to temporary numbness or tingling sensations. This is often referred to as neuropraxia, which is a temporary loss of function in a nerve due to compression or injury. In most cases, this condition resolves on its own as the nerve heals, but it can take several weeks to months for full sensation to return.
Secondly, the coldness you are experiencing in your leg could be due to reduced blood flow or circulation issues post-surgery. After any surgical procedure, especially one involving the knee, it is common for the body to respond with localized swelling and inflammation. This can lead to a feeling of coldness in the affected limb, as the body directs blood flow to areas that are healing. Additionally, if you are less active due to pain or discomfort, circulation may be further compromised, contributing to the sensation of coldness.
Another factor to consider is the use of ice or cold therapy post-surgery, which is often recommended to reduce swelling and manage pain. While this is beneficial for recovery, it can also lead to a temporary feeling of coldness in the leg. If you have been using ice packs frequently, it might be worth reducing their use or ensuring that they are not applied for extended periods.
In terms of duration, the numbness and cold sensations should gradually improve over time. Typically, you can expect to see some improvement within a few weeks, but it may take several months for complete resolution. It is essential to follow your surgeon's post-operative care instructions, including any prescribed physical therapy, as this can help improve circulation and nerve function in the affected leg.
If the symptoms persist beyond a few weeks or worsen, it is crucial to consult your healthcare provider. They may recommend further evaluation to rule out any complications, such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), which can occur after surgery and may present with swelling, pain, and changes in temperature in the affected limb.
In summary, while numbness and coldness in the leg after meniscus surgery can be concerning, they are often part of the normal healing process. Monitoring your symptoms, maintaining mobility as tolerated, and following up with your healthcare provider will help ensure a smooth recovery. If you have any doubts or if your symptoms change, do not hesitate to reach out to your surgeon for guidance.
