Retinal issues, police academy?
Hello Doctor, I have retinal degeneration, and several examinations have shown no deterioration.
This year, I am a senior in high school and want to apply to the police academy to serve as a general administrative police officer, which is quite common.
I have read the admission guidelines, and it states that as long as one does not have color blindness or color weakness, they are eligible.
I am concerned that if I get accepted and undergo training in self-defense techniques such as judo and apprehending suspects, it might harm my eyes and cause further damage to my retina.
Should I give up on this path and attend a regular university instead?
Additionally, I just saw a program on TV introducing a unique Taiwanese product, propolis extract, claiming it is beneficial for the optic nerve.
Is this true? What supplements would you recommend for someone with retinal degeneration to support eye health? Thank you for taking the time to respond.

Hello: I do not recommend any health supplements, and training should not cause any eye injuries.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

When considering a career in law enforcement, particularly with a background of retinal degeneration, it's essential to weigh the potential risks and benefits carefully. Your concern about whether the physical training involved in police academy training—such as grappling, judo, and other self-defense techniques—might exacerbate your retinal condition is valid. While it is true that vigorous physical activity can pose risks for individuals with pre-existing eye conditions, the extent of these risks can vary significantly based on the severity of your retinal degeneration and your overall eye health.
Retinal degeneration can lead to a variety of visual impairments, and while your condition has not worsened according to recent examinations, it is crucial to maintain regular check-ups with your ophthalmologist. They can provide personalized advice based on the specifics of your condition. Generally, activities that involve high-impact movements or potential trauma to the head and eyes should be approached with caution. However, many individuals with retinal issues can participate in physical training safely, provided they take necessary precautions and are monitored closely by medical professionals.
Regarding your question about the potential benefits of green propolis extract for retinal health, while there is some anecdotal evidence suggesting that certain natural supplements may support eye health, scientific research on the specific effects of green propolis on retinal degeneration is limited. Propolis is known for its antioxidant properties, which can be beneficial for overall health, but it should not be viewed as a substitute for conventional medical treatment. Always consult with your healthcare provider before starting any new supplement, especially if you have a pre-existing condition.
As for dietary supplements or health products that may support eye health, some nutrients have been shown to be beneficial for retinal health. These include:
1. Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Found in fish oil, these fatty acids are known to support retinal health and may help reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
2. Lutein and Zeaxanthin: These carotenoids are found in leafy greens and are believed to protect the retina from oxidative stress.
3. Vitamins C and E: These antioxidants can help combat oxidative damage in the eyes.
4. Zinc: This mineral is essential for maintaining the health of the retina and may help slow the progression of retinal degeneration.
5. Vitamin A: Important for overall eye health, vitamin A deficiency can lead to serious vision problems.
Before taking any supplements, it is advisable to discuss them with your ophthalmologist or a healthcare provider who understands your specific health needs. They can help you determine the right approach based on your current condition and lifestyle.
In conclusion, while pursuing a career in law enforcement with retinal degeneration is not impossible, it requires careful consideration and consultation with medical professionals. If you are passionate about this career path, it may be worth exploring further, but ensure that you prioritize your eye health and safety. If you find that the physical demands of the training are too risky, pursuing a different academic path may be a wise decision. Ultimately, your health should come first, and there are many fulfilling careers available that can accommodate your needs.
