Gastric ulcer a acid
Hello doctor, how long does a gastric ulcer last? Can a gastric ulcer cause difficulty breathing? A few years ago, I had a condition related to my mother, so I need to take 4 to 5 capsules of Accutane each month for my follow-up appointments.
The doctor mentioned that it might be caused by Accutane.
I have never undergone an endoscopy.

Hello: When the protective mechanisms of the stomach and the erosive effects of gastric acid lose balance, ulcers can develop.
To heal quickly, it is essential to address the underlying causes of the damage.
Theoretically, ulcers do not cause ulcers unless gastric acid refluxes into the trachea, triggering asthma.

Stomach ulcers, also known as peptic ulcers, are open sores that develop on the lining of the stomach or the upper part of the small intestine. The duration of a stomach ulcer can vary significantly depending on several factors, including the underlying cause, the treatment approach, and individual patient characteristics.
Typically, with appropriate treatment, most stomach ulcers can heal within a few weeks to a couple of months. However, if the ulcer is caused by an infection with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), it is crucial to eradicate the bacteria to promote healing. Treatment usually involves a combination of antibiotics and proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) to reduce stomach acid and allow the ulcer to heal. If left untreated, ulcers can persist for a long time and may lead to complications such as bleeding, perforation, or gastric obstruction.
Regarding your concern about experiencing difficulty breathing, it is important to note that while stomach ulcers primarily cause gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, and indigestion, they are not typically associated with respiratory symptoms. However, severe pain from an ulcer can sometimes lead to shallow breathing or a feeling of discomfort, which might be perceived as difficulty in breathing. Additionally, if an ulcer leads to complications such as bleeding, it could potentially result in anemia, which may cause fatigue and shortness of breath.
You mentioned that you have been taking a high dose of isotretinoin (often referred to as "A酸" in Mandarin), which is commonly used for severe acne. Isotretinoin can have gastrointestinal side effects, including abdominal pain and discomfort, and it may exacerbate pre-existing conditions like ulcers. It is essential to communicate with your healthcare provider about any gastrointestinal symptoms you experience while on isotretinoin, as they may need to monitor your condition more closely or adjust your treatment plan.
If you have not undergone an endoscopy (gastroscopy) to evaluate your stomach, it may be beneficial to discuss this with your doctor. An endoscopy can provide a direct view of the stomach lining and help diagnose any ulcers or other abnormalities. It is also an opportunity to obtain biopsies if necessary.
In summary, the duration of a stomach ulcer can vary, but with appropriate treatment, most heal within weeks to months. Difficulty breathing is not a common symptom of stomach ulcers, but severe pain or complications could lead to discomfort. If you suspect that your medication is contributing to your symptoms, it is crucial to consult with your healthcare provider for a comprehensive evaluation and management plan. Regular follow-ups and open communication with your doctor are vital for effectively managing your condition and ensuring your overall health.
