Itching in the urethra after ejaculation?
Hello doctor, after ejaculation yesterday and today, the tip of my urethra (glans) feels itchy, and both the glans and perineum are itchy for about 3-5 minutes.
After that, only the urethra remains itchy for about 20 minutes, and then it goes away.
What could this symptom be? Is it urethritis? There is no discharge, and urination does not hurt or itch.
Could it just be a minor injury from DIY? Thank you, doctor.

Hello: If there has been sexual activity, it is recommended to consult a urologist for examination.
If there has been no sexual activity and only DIY methods have been used, you can observe and see if there is gradual improvement.
Wishing you good health.

More Info
Itchy sensations in the urethra after ejaculation can be concerning, but they are not uncommon. The symptoms you describe—itching at the tip of the urethra and the glans (the head of the penis) that lasts for a short duration—can have several potential causes.
Possible Causes
1. Irritation or Sensitivity: After ejaculation, the urethra can become temporarily irritated due to friction or sensitivity, especially if there has been any vigorous activity. This irritation can lead to a brief period of itching or discomfort.
2. Infection: While you mentioned that there are no discharge or pain during urination, it is still possible to have a mild infection, such as urethritis, which can cause itching. Urethritis can be caused by sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or non-infectious factors. If the itching persists or is accompanied by other symptoms, it would be wise to consult a healthcare provider.
3. Allergic Reaction: Sometimes, products such as soaps, lotions, or lubricants can cause an allergic reaction or irritation, leading to itching. If you have recently changed any products used in your genital area, consider whether they might be the cause.
4. Dryness: If the skin in the genital area is dry, it can lead to itching. This can happen due to various reasons, including dehydration or environmental factors.
5. Dermatological Conditions: Skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis can also affect the genital area, leading to itching. These conditions may require specific treatments.
When to Seek Medical Attention
While occasional itching may not be a cause for concern, you should seek medical attention if:
- The itching persists or worsens.
- You develop additional symptoms such as discharge, pain during urination, or swelling.
- You notice any unusual changes in your genital area, such as rashes or lesions.
Diagnosis and Treatment
If you decide to see a healthcare provider, they may perform a physical examination and possibly order tests to rule out infections or other conditions. Treatment will depend on the underlying cause. For example, if an infection is diagnosed, antibiotics may be prescribed. If irritation is the cause, recommendations may include avoiding irritants and using soothing creams.
Self-Care Measures
In the meantime, here are some self-care measures you can consider:
- Gentle Cleansing: Use mild, unscented soap and avoid harsh chemicals in the genital area.
- Moisturizing: If dryness is an issue, consider using a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer.
- Avoid Irritants: Stay away from products that may irritate the skin, such as scented soaps or lotions.
- Hydration: Ensure you are well-hydrated, as this can help maintain skin moisture.
Conclusion
In summary, while the itching you are experiencing after ejaculation may not be serious, it is essential to monitor your symptoms. If the itching continues or you develop other symptoms, consulting a healthcare provider is advisable to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment. Taking care of your genital health is crucial, and being proactive about any changes is always a good approach.
