What date is my conception date?
Hello Doctor: My last menstrual period started on February 3, 2018, and my cycle is irregular.
My periods usually last about 8-10 days.
On February 24, my obstetrician said that I could trigger ovulation that day, and I had intercourse on February 25, 26, and March 12.
On March 16, I tested positive for pregnancy with two strong lines on a home pregnancy test.
A visit to the obstetrician also confirmed pregnancy, but the gestational sac was not visible.
On March 19, a gestational sac measuring 0.6 cm was observed.
By March 30, a heartbeat was detected.
Could it be that I became pregnant from the intercourse on March 12? What is the likelihood that the March 12 encounter is the one that resulted in this pregnancy? Thank you for your response, Doctor.

Determining the conception date can be a complex process, especially when menstrual cycles are irregular or when there are multiple instances of unprotected intercourse around the time of ovulation. Based on the information you've provided, let's break down the details to better understand your situation.
Firstly, you mentioned that your menstrual cycle is uncertain, with periods lasting about 8-10 days. This extended duration can sometimes indicate hormonal imbalances or other underlying issues, which could affect ovulation timing. Typically, ovulation occurs about 14 days before the start of your next period. However, if your cycles are irregular, pinpointing the exact day of ovulation can be challenging.
You had intercourse on February 25, 26, and March 12, with a positive pregnancy test on March 16. The fact that you received a positive pregnancy test indicates that conception likely occurred within a window of time that aligns with your ovulation. Given that sperm can live in the female reproductive tract for up to five days, the intercourse on February 25 and 26 could potentially lead to conception if ovulation occurred shortly after.
However, the timing of your ovulation is crucial. If you were advised by your doctor on February 24 that you could trigger ovulation with an injection, it is likely that ovulation occurred shortly thereafter. If we assume that the injection was effective, ovulation could have occurred around February 25 or 26. Therefore, the intercourse on those dates could indeed be responsible for the conception.
Regarding the intercourse on March 12, while it is possible for conception to occur from this encounter, it is less likely given the timing of your positive pregnancy test. By March 12, if ovulation had already occurred, the chances of sperm successfully fertilizing an egg would be lower, as the egg typically has a lifespan of about 12-24 hours post-ovulation.
The ultrasound on March 19 showing a 0.6 cm gestational sac and the confirmation of a heartbeat on March 30 further support the idea that conception likely occurred around the time of your earlier intercourse. The gestational sac size and the presence of a heartbeat are indicators of a developing pregnancy, and these findings correlate with the timing of ovulation and conception.
In conclusion, while it is possible that the intercourse on March 12 could have resulted in conception, the evidence suggests that the more likely dates for conception are around February 25 or 26, following your ovulation. If you have further questions or concerns about your pregnancy or menstrual cycle, it is advisable to consult with your healthcare provider for personalized guidance and support. They can provide you with more specific information based on your medical history and any additional tests that may be necessary.
Understanding your cycle and ovulation can help in planning for future pregnancies or addressing any concerns about menstrual irregularities. It's essential to maintain open communication with your healthcare provider to ensure that you receive the best care possible during this exciting time.
