Retinal degeneration issues?
Hello Doctor, I have been aware of my retinal degeneration for some time now, and I have been undergoing dilated eye examinations every three months.
I would like to ask if commercially available lutein supplements can help in the treatment of retinal degeneration.
Additionally, I have been using a mild dilating agent to maintain my vision around 300 degrees; is this acceptable? How much lutein should I supplement daily, and are there any other supplements I should consider? Thank you, Doctor.

Dr. Cai Wenyuan reply Ophthalmology
Hello, if there is peripheral retinal degeneration, it is a structural issue and is not directly related to lutein.
Wishing you peace and health.
Sincerely, Dr.
Tsai Wen-Yuan, Director of the Department of Ophthalmology, Taoyuan General Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

More Info
Lutein is a carotenoid that is found in high concentrations in the retina, particularly in the macula, which is responsible for central vision. It is known for its antioxidant properties and its ability to filter harmful blue light, which can contribute to retinal damage over time. Research has suggested that lutein may play a role in protecting against age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and other forms of retinal degeneration. However, while there is some evidence supporting the benefits of lutein for eye health, it is important to note that it is not a cure for retinal degeneration.
In terms of supplementation, the typical recommended dosage of lutein varies, but many studies suggest a daily intake of around 10 to 20 mg. It is often recommended to take lutein with a meal that contains fat, as it is a fat-soluble nutrient, which can enhance its absorption. While lutein supplements can be beneficial, it is also essential to focus on a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, particularly leafy greens, which are natural sources of lutein. Foods such as kale, spinach, and broccoli are excellent choices.
In addition to lutein, other nutrients are important for maintaining eye health, especially for individuals with retinal degeneration. These include:
1. Vitamin A: Essential for maintaining good vision and preventing night blindness. It is found in foods like carrots, sweet potatoes, and liver.
2. Vitamin C and E: Both are antioxidants that help protect the eyes from oxidative stress. Citrus fruits, nuts, and seeds are good sources.
3. Zinc: Important for the health of the retina and may help prevent age-related vision loss. Foods rich in zinc include oysters, beef, and pumpkin seeds.
4. Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Found in fish like salmon and flaxseeds, omega-3s are known to support retinal health and may help reduce the risk of AMD.
5. B Vitamins: Particularly B6, B12, and folate, which may help reduce the risk of AMD and support overall eye health.
Regarding your use of mydriatic agents (dilating drops) to control your vision, it is crucial to follow your eye care provider's recommendations. These drops can help in the examination of the retina but should be used as prescribed. Long-term use should be monitored by an eye care professional to ensure there are no adverse effects on your vision or eye health.
In summary, while lutein supplements may offer some protective benefits for retinal health, they should be part of a broader approach that includes a balanced diet rich in various nutrients essential for eye health. Regular check-ups with your eye doctor are also vital to monitor any changes in your condition and adjust your treatment plan as necessary. Always consult with your healthcare provider before starting any new supplements or making significant changes to your diet, especially given your history of retinal degeneration.
