The issue of increasing astigmatism?
Hello, Doctor.
I currently wear glasses with a prescription of 50 degrees of astigmatism in my left eye and none in my right eye.
However, a few days ago, I went to the hospital for an examination due to double vision and found that the astigmatism in my left eye is now measured at 175 degrees, which is significantly higher than the 50 degrees prescribed in my glasses.
I would like to ask you a few questions:
1.
I have heard that astigmatism in adults does not change significantly, but the double vision I am experiencing has only occurred in the past month or two.
Is it possible for the degree of astigmatism to increase so dramatically in such a short period of time?
2.
The examination results showed no abnormalities in the cornea or retina, suggesting that the increase in astigmatism is the only issue.
Could the measured degree of astigmatism be influenced by factors such as the environment, behaviors (like using a smartphone before the test), or the equipment used on the day of the examination?
3.
What methods are available to reduce the degree of astigmatism? Is it solely dependent on wearing corrective glasses?
4.
Since I can see clearly with my current glasses aside from the double vision, I do not plan to get new glasses immediately.
However, if I continue to wear these glasses with insufficient astigmatism correction, will it worsen my astigmatism?
Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions, Doctor.

Astigmatism is a common refractive error that occurs when the cornea or lens of the eye has an irregular shape, leading to blurred or distorted vision. Your concerns about the sudden increase in astigmatism and the accompanying symptoms of diplopia (double vision) are valid and warrant a thorough understanding of the condition.
1. Rapid Changes in Astigmatism: While it is true that astigmatism typically stabilizes in adulthood, significant changes can occur due to various factors. In your case, a jump from 50 degrees to 175 degrees in a short period is unusual but not impossible. Factors such as changes in the shape of the cornea, the onset of keratoconus (a condition where the cornea thins and bulges), or even external influences like eye strain from prolonged screen time can contribute to fluctuations in astigmatism. Additionally, conditions like inflammation or trauma to the eye can also lead to changes in corneal curvature.
2. Measurement Influences: The accuracy of astigmatism measurements can indeed be affected by several factors, including the environment and your behavior prior to the examination. For instance, using your phone or other screens before the test can lead to temporary eye strain, which might affect the results. Furthermore, the equipment used for measurement can also play a role. It is essential to ensure that the testing conditions are optimal and that you are well-rested before undergoing an eye exam.
3. Reducing Astigmatism: Unfortunately, there is no definitive method to "reduce" astigmatism without corrective lenses or surgical intervention. The primary treatment for astigmatism is the use of corrective eyewear, such as glasses or contact lenses, which can help focus light correctly onto the retina. In some cases, refractive surgery, such as LASIK or PRK, may be considered to reshape the cornea and reduce astigmatism. However, these options should be discussed with an eye care professional to determine the best course of action based on your specific situation.
4. Wearing Incorrect Prescription Glasses: Continuing to wear glasses with an outdated prescription can lead to visual discomfort, including eye strain and headaches. While it may not necessarily worsen your astigmatism, it can exacerbate symptoms like diplopia and lead to further visual complications. If your current glasses do not provide adequate correction, it is advisable to schedule an appointment with your eye care provider to discuss the need for a new prescription.
In conclusion, while astigmatism can remain relatively stable in adults, various factors can lead to sudden changes. It is crucial to monitor your symptoms and consult with an eye care professional for a comprehensive evaluation. They can provide tailored advice and treatment options based on your specific needs. Regular eye exams are essential to ensure that any changes in your vision are promptly addressed, and appropriate corrective measures are taken.
