Is it appropriate to massage a breast with a tumor?

Hello Doctor, six months ago I experienced pain in my left chest, so I underwent a breast ultrasound, which revealed multiple fibrocystic changes in both breasts.
After six months of follow-up, in addition to the existing fibrocystic changes, a 0.8 cm fibroepithelial tumor was found in my left breast.
I would like to ask if it is safe to massage my breasts since I regularly go for spa treatments (approximately once a week).
Is there a possibility that excessive pressure could cause changes in the tumor? Thank you for your response.

Linda, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2018/05/08

Dr. Yuan Tianmin reply Breast and Thyroid

Generally, simple massage should be fine.

When it comes to breast health, particularly in the context of fibrocystic changes and adenomas, the question of whether breast massage is safe is a common concern. Fibrocystic breast changes are characterized by the presence of lumps or cysts in the breast tissue, which can cause discomfort or pain. Adenomas, on the other hand, are benign tumors that can also develop in the breast tissue.
Firstly, it is important to understand that fibrocystic changes and adenomas are generally benign conditions. They are not cancerous and do not increase the risk of breast cancer. However, they can cause symptoms such as breast pain or tenderness, which can be exacerbated by hormonal fluctuations, particularly during the menstrual cycle.

Regarding breast massage, there is no definitive evidence to suggest that gentle massage of the breasts is harmful to fibrocystic changes or adenomas. In fact, some women find that gentle massage can help alleviate discomfort associated with fibrocystic breasts. However, it is crucial to differentiate between gentle massage and aggressive manipulation.
Aggressive or deep tissue massage could potentially lead to discomfort or exacerbate existing pain, especially if there are cysts or adenomas present. It is advisable to avoid any form of massage that causes significant pressure or pain. If you are receiving spa treatments that include breast massage, it is essential to communicate your condition to the therapist. They should be able to adjust their techniques to ensure your comfort and safety.

Moreover, regular monitoring of your breast health is vital. Since you have been diagnosed with multiple fibrocystic changes and a new adenoma, it is crucial to continue with regular follow-ups and imaging as recommended by your healthcare provider. This will help ensure that any changes in your breast tissue are monitored closely.

In addition to monitoring, maintaining a healthy lifestyle can also contribute to overall breast health. This includes a balanced diet, regular exercise, and managing stress levels. Some studies suggest that reducing caffeine and dietary fat may help alleviate symptoms of fibrocystic breast changes, although more research is needed in this area.

If you experience any new symptoms, such as changes in the size or shape of the lumps, or if you notice any unusual discharge from the nipples, it is essential to consult your healthcare provider promptly. They may recommend further evaluation or imaging to rule out any concerns.

In summary, gentle breast massage is generally considered safe for individuals with fibrocystic changes and adenomas, provided it is done carefully and without excessive pressure. Always communicate with your healthcare provider about your concerns and any treatments you are considering, and ensure that any massage therapy is tailored to your specific needs and comfort levels. Regular monitoring and a healthy lifestyle are key components in managing breast health.
