After undergoing rubber band ligation for internal hemorrhoids, there may be blood in the stool?
Hello, doctor! In mid-March of this year, I noticed blood in my stool, so I went to the hospital to see a doctor and underwent a colonoscopy.
It was found that I had two internal hemorrhoids, and there were no polyps in the colon; however, my intestines move faster than average, which can lead to diarrhea.
That day, the doctor performed a ligation procedure on me.
I would like to ask if it is possible to ligate both hemorrhoids in one procedure.
Additionally, after the ligation, I occasionally notice blood in my stool, but the amount is much less than before.
Sometimes there is blood on the tissue, sometimes on the stool, and occasionally after drinking alcohol, the situation seems to worsen.
Could this indicate another condition, or is it possible that the ligation was not successful? Thank you for your response.

After undergoing hemorrhoid ligation, it's understandable to have concerns about the presence of blood in your stool. Hemorrhoid ligation is a common procedure used to treat hemorrhoids, particularly internal ones, by cutting off their blood supply, causing them to shrink and eventually fall off.
To address your questions:
1. Can two hemorrhoids be ligated at once? Yes, it is common practice for surgeons to ligate multiple hemorrhoids during a single procedure, provided that the patient is in good health and the hemorrhoids are accessible. This approach can be more efficient and may reduce the need for multiple visits.
2. Post-operative bleeding: It's not unusual to experience some bleeding after hemorrhoid ligation. The fact that the blood you are seeing is less than before is a positive sign, indicating that the procedure may have been effective. However, the presence of blood in your stool can also be influenced by several factors, including:
- Healing Process: After the ligation, the tissue around the treated area may still be healing, which can lead to minor bleeding.
- Diet and Lifestyle: Certain foods, particularly those that can irritate the digestive tract (like alcohol), can exacerbate bleeding. If you notice that drinking alcohol leads to more bleeding, it may be wise to limit or avoid it during your recovery.
- Bowel Movements: Straining during bowel movements or having hard stools can also cause irritation and bleeding. It's essential to maintain a diet high in fiber and stay hydrated to promote softer stools.
3. Other potential issues: While it’s likely that the bleeding is related to the healing process post-ligation, it’s essential to monitor the situation. If the bleeding persists, increases, or is accompanied by other symptoms such as severe pain, changes in bowel habits, or signs of infection (like fever), it would be prudent to consult your healthcare provider. They may want to perform a follow-up examination to ensure that there are no complications, such as:
- Residual Hemorrhoids: Sometimes, not all hemorrhoids can be effectively treated in one session, and residual hemorrhoids may still cause symptoms.
- Anal Fissures: These are small tears in the lining of the anus that can occur due to straining or passing hard stools, leading to bleeding and pain.
- Other Conditions: Although less common, other gastrointestinal issues could cause blood in the stool, such as diverticulosis or inflammatory bowel disease.
In summary, while some post-operative bleeding can be normal, especially after hemorrhoid ligation, it’s crucial to keep an eye on the amount and frequency of bleeding. If you have any concerns or if the bleeding does not improve, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further evaluation. They can provide reassurance and ensure that your recovery is on track.
