Loose stools?

Hello Doctor, I would like to ask a few questions.
I have a bowel movement every morning at 9 AM, and it is usually once a day in the morning.
Recently, I started taking probiotics for the past week, taking one packet on an empty stomach in the morning.
However, I have noticed that my stools have been loose lately; before flushing, I observed that they were scattered and yellow-brown in color.
This week, while taking probiotics, I still have my regular morning bowel movement, but occasionally after breakfast at work, I feel the urge to have a loose stool, although I do not experience any abdominal pain, and it only happens once with a small amount.
I would like to ask a few questions:
1.
What could be the reason for having a regular bowel movement once a day but with loose stools?
2.
Can taking probiotics cause loose stools? I have only been taking them for a week, and I do not have daily loose stools; it only happens occasionally, and I do not take them every day—just about three days a week.

3.
How can I restore my stools to a normal, formed consistency? (I have a relatively weak digestive system, and my body tends to be on the cooler side, and I also experience symptoms of indigestion.) Thank you very much, Doctor!

Dr. Chen Shidian reply Gastroenterology and Hepatology

Hello, Ms.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is often managed through dietary adjustments (low fat, low dairy, regular meals) and reducing lifestyle stress, along with the use of motility-modifying medications.
Currently, there is no scientific evidence supporting the substantial benefits of probiotics.
If you continue to experience bowel issues, you may discuss medication options with a gastroenterologist.

Understanding loose stools and digestive health is a multifaceted topic that involves various factors, including diet, gut microbiota, and individual health conditions. Based on your description, it seems you have been experiencing changes in your bowel movements since you started taking probiotics. Let's address your questions one by one.

1. Why are my stools loose even though I have a regular bowel movement once a day?
Loose stools can be caused by several factors, including dietary changes, stress, infections, or underlying gastrointestinal conditions. Since you mentioned that you have a history of digestive issues and a "cold" constitution, it is possible that your digestive system is sensitive to changes. Probiotics can alter the gut microbiome, which may lead to temporary changes in stool consistency. Additionally, if your diet has included more fiber or certain foods that are harder to digest, this could also contribute to looser stools. It's essential to monitor your diet and see if specific foods correlate with the changes in your bowel movements.

2. Can probiotics cause diarrhea?
Yes, probiotics can sometimes lead to gastrointestinal disturbances, including loose stools or diarrhea, especially when you first start taking them. This is often a temporary effect as your gut adjusts to the new bacteria. If you are taking probiotics on an empty stomach, it may also affect how your body reacts to them. It's crucial to choose a high-quality probiotic and consider starting with a lower dose to see how your body responds before increasing the amount. If the loose stools persist or worsen, it may be worth consulting with a healthcare professional to evaluate your specific probiotic strain and dosage.

3. How can I restore normal stool consistency?
To help restore your stool to a more normal consistency, consider the following strategies:
- Dietary Adjustments: Focus on a balanced diet that includes soluble fiber (found in foods like oats, bananas, and apples) which can help firm up stools. Avoid excessive intake of high-fat or greasy foods, as well as artificial sweeteners, which can sometimes lead to loose stools.

- Hydration: Ensure you are drinking enough water. Dehydration can lead to digestive issues, but excessive water intake can also contribute to looser stools. Aim for a balanced approach.

- Probiotic Strain: If you continue to experience loose stools, consider trying a different strain of probiotics, as some strains are better suited for certain digestive issues than others.

- Regular Eating Schedule: Eating at regular intervals can help regulate your digestive system. Avoid skipping meals, as this can lead to irregular bowel habits.

- Consult a Healthcare Provider: Since you mentioned having a "weak" digestive system and symptoms of indigestion, it may be beneficial to consult with a healthcare provider or a gastroenterologist. They can provide personalized advice and may suggest further testing to rule out any underlying conditions.

In summary, while probiotics can be beneficial for digestive health, they can also lead to temporary changes in bowel habits. It's essential to listen to your body and make adjustments as needed. If your symptoms persist or worsen, seeking professional medical advice is always a prudent step. Remember that digestive health is complex, and what works for one person may not work for another, so a tailored approach is often the best strategy.
