Symptoms after applying medication for balanitis?

Hello, doctor.
Last week, I visited the doctor and was diagnosed with balanitis due to red spots resembling broken skin on the glans.
Later, I noticed three red dots in a straight line on the side of the glans.
The doctor prescribed Fusidic Acid ointment and a three-day course of IKODIN to be taken orally.
I applied the ointment three times a day or whenever I remembered, and I also applied it before bed.
However, after three days, there seems to be no improvement, and the red spots are still present.
During today's follow-up, the doctor advised me to continue using the ointment and return afterward.
Is it normal not to see any improvement after three days of applying the ointment? Additionally, after applying the ointment, is it better to keep the glans exposed or should I cover it with the foreskin? Thank you.

General balanitis typically resolves within 1 to 2 weeks, regardless of whether medication is applied.
It is best to keep the glans exposed and maintain cleanliness and dryness.

More Info

Balanitis, or inflammation of the glans penis, can be a distressing condition, and understanding what to expect during and after treatment is crucial for effective management. In your case, you've been prescribed Fusidic Acid ointment and an oral medication (IKODIN) for three days, but you haven't noticed significant improvement. It's important to recognize that while some patients may see rapid improvement, others may take longer to respond to treatment.

Understanding Post-Treatment Symptoms of Balanitis
1. Initial Expectations: After starting treatment for balanitis, it is common to expect some degree of improvement within a few days. However, the response can vary significantly based on the underlying cause of the inflammation, the severity of the condition, and individual factors such as skin sensitivity and overall health. In some cases, it may take longer than three days to see noticeable changes, especially if the inflammation is more severe or if there are complicating factors such as a secondary infection.

2. Continued Symptoms: If you are still experiencing redness and discomfort after three days of treatment, this can be normal, particularly if the inflammation was significant at the outset. It is essential to continue using the medication as prescribed. Sometimes, the initial treatment may need to be extended or adjusted based on the physician's assessment.

3. Follow-Up Care: Your doctor has advised you to continue applying the ointment and to return for a follow-up. This is a standard approach, as it allows the physician to monitor your progress and make necessary adjustments to your treatment plan. If after completing the course of medication you still do not see improvement, further evaluation may be needed to rule out other underlying conditions, such as a fungal infection or an allergic reaction.

Application of Medication
Regarding your question about whether to keep the glans exposed or to cover it after applying the ointment, here are some considerations:
- Exposure vs. Coverage: Keeping the glans exposed after applying the ointment can allow for better air circulation, which may help in the healing process. However, it is also important to consider comfort and hygiene. If covering the area with the foreskin provides relief and does not cause additional irritation, it may be appropriate to do so.
- Hygiene Practices: Regardless of whether you keep the area exposed or covered, maintaining good hygiene is crucial. Gently clean the area with mild soap and water, and ensure that it is dry before applying the ointment. Avoid using harsh soaps or irritants that could exacerbate the condition.

When to Seek Further Help
If you notice any of the following, it is important to seek further medical advice:
- Worsening Symptoms: If the redness, pain, or swelling increases rather than improves.

- Signs of Infection: Such as pus, increased warmth, or fever.

- Persistent Symptoms: If there is no improvement after completing the prescribed course of treatment.

In summary, while it can be concerning to not see immediate improvement after starting treatment for balanitis, it is not uncommon. Continue to follow your doctor's instructions, maintain good hygiene, and keep an open line of communication with your healthcare provider regarding your symptoms and any changes you observe. Your health and comfort are paramount, and your physician is there to help guide you through this process.
