I have been frequently catching colds over the past year?
Hello, Doctor: Over the past year, I have frequently caught colds, almost once a month.
Recently, I have noticed a pattern regarding the onset of my colds.
It seems that I can no longer tolerate cold beverages; whenever I drink something cold, I start to feel different, and after about 4-5 days, I experience symptoms such as a runny nose, post-nasal drip, nasal congestion, and sore throat.
I am also extremely sensitive to temperature changes.
If there is a significant temperature difference that I don't pay attention to, I also develop the aforementioned cold symptoms after about 4-5 days.
Could you please explain why this is happening? Why has my health deteriorated so much over the past year? Is there a way for Traditional Chinese Medicine to help improve my condition? It is quite inconvenient to have young children at home who also catch colds.
Thank you for your assistance.

Dear online friend A-De: I have noticed that after drinking cold beverages, I experience symptoms such as a runny nose, post-nasal drip, nasal congestion, and sore throat about 4-5 days later.
Congratulations! You have discovered the key to maintaining your health – avoiding cold drinks.
The solution is to refrain from consuming cold beverages, minimize exposure to air conditioning, be cautious of weather changes, and carry an extra layer of clothing and a mask when going out to guard against cold air.
By being well-prepared, you can prevent getting sick.
Wishing you health and safety! Sincerely, Yen Su-Mei, Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Nantou Hospital.

Frequent colds can be a frustrating and debilitating issue, especially when they seem to occur with alarming regularity. Your experience of becoming sensitive to cold drinks and temperature changes, leading to symptoms like nasal congestion, throat pain, and runny nose, suggests that your body may be reacting to environmental factors in a way that compromises your immune system. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), this condition can be understood through the lens of "Wei Qi" (defensive Qi), which is responsible for protecting the body from external pathogens, including cold and wind.
In TCM, frequent colds are often attributed to a deficiency in Wei Qi, which can be caused by several factors, including lifestyle choices, dietary habits, and even emotional stress. Your observation that consuming cold drinks triggers symptoms indicates that your body may have a "cold" constitution, meaning it is more susceptible to the effects of cold environments or foods. This can lead to an imbalance where your body struggles to maintain its internal warmth, making it easier for external pathogens to invade.
To address this issue, TCM offers several strategies:
1. Dietary Adjustments: It is crucial to avoid cold and raw foods, including ice-cold drinks, as they can further weaken your digestive system and contribute to internal coldness. Instead, focus on warm, cooked foods that nourish the body. Incorporating warming spices like ginger, cinnamon, and garlic can also help to enhance your internal warmth and support your immune function.
2. Herbal Remedies: TCM practitioners often recommend specific herbal formulas to strengthen Wei Qi and improve overall health. For example, formulas like "Sheng Mai San" can help to tonify Qi and support lung function, while "Ren Shen" (Ginseng) is known for its ability to boost energy and immune response. It's essential to consult with a qualified TCM practitioner to determine the best herbal approach for your specific condition.
3. Acupuncture: This ancient practice can help to balance the body's energy and improve circulation. Acupuncture points that strengthen Wei Qi and support the lungs may be particularly beneficial for someone experiencing frequent colds. Regular sessions can help to enhance your body's resilience against external pathogens.
4. Lifestyle Modifications: Incorporating gentle exercise, such as Tai Chi or Qi Gong, can help to improve circulation and strengthen your body's defenses. Additionally, ensuring you get adequate rest and managing stress levels are vital components of maintaining a healthy immune system.
5. Avoiding Sudden Temperature Changes: Since you mentioned being sensitive to temperature fluctuations, it is advisable to dress appropriately for the weather and avoid sudden exposure to cold environments. Layering clothing can help maintain your body temperature and protect against drafts.
6. Strengthening the Spleen: In TCM, the spleen plays a crucial role in digestion and the production of Qi. A weak spleen can lead to deficiencies that make you more susceptible to colds. Consuming warm, nourishing foods and avoiding excessive damp or cold foods can help strengthen the spleen.
In conclusion, your frequent colds may be a sign of an underlying deficiency in Wei Qi, exacerbated by dietary choices and environmental factors. By making dietary changes, considering herbal remedies, engaging in acupuncture, and adopting a holistic approach to your lifestyle, you can work towards improving your overall health and resilience against colds. It is advisable to consult with a qualified TCM practitioner who can provide personalized recommendations based on your specific symptoms and constitution. This approach not only addresses the immediate symptoms but also works towards restoring balance and strengthening your immune system for the long term.
