Post-Surgery Concerns: Changes in Penis Size After Circumcision - Urology

Postoperative issues

Hello Doctor, I underwent a circumcision on May 30th, and it has now been 16 days since the surgery.
I have noticed that after an erection, it seems like the length of my penis has shortened.
Previously, it was about 10-11 cm, but now it seems to be only 6-7 cm.
Is it possible for the length of the penis to decrease after circumcision? Or could this be related to the sutures from the frenulum that have not yet dissolved? Additionally, how long should I wait before I can masturbate? Thank you for your assistance.

Dr. Du Shixi reply Urology

Hello: Circumcision only involves the removal of skin and does not affect the penis itself, so there is no issue with a decrease in penile length.
If the absorbable sutures have not fallen out after two weeks, a follow-up appointment can be scheduled for management.
As for how long after the procedure one can resume masturbation, I advised the patient that waiting for about four weeks is preferable.
Wishing you good health.

After undergoing circumcision, it is not uncommon for patients to have concerns about changes in penis size, particularly regarding the length during an erection. In your case, you mentioned that you have noticed a significant decrease in the length of your penis during erections, which has understandably caused you concern.

Firstly, it is essential to understand that circumcision involves the removal of the foreskin, which can sometimes lead to a perception of changes in size. The foreskin, when present, can contribute to the overall appearance and feel of the penis, and its removal may alter how the penis appears when erect. However, it is important to note that circumcision itself does not physically shorten the penis. The perceived change in length could be due to several factors, including swelling from the surgery, the healing process, or even psychological factors related to the surgery and its aftermath.

In the immediate post-operative period, it is common for there to be some swelling and changes in the tissue that can affect the appearance of the penis. This swelling typically subsides as the healing progresses, which can take several weeks. The stitches from the procedure can also create some tension in the area, which might contribute to the feeling of a shorter length. As the healing progresses and the stitches dissolve or are removed, you may notice a return to a more typical appearance.

Regarding your question about when you can resume masturbation, it is generally advised to wait until you have fully healed, which can take anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks, depending on individual healing rates and the specifics of your surgery. Engaging in sexual activity or masturbation too soon can risk disrupting the healing process, leading to complications such as infection or reopening of the surgical site. It is best to consult with your surgeon or healthcare provider for personalized advice based on your healing progress.

In summary, while it is not typical for circumcision to result in a permanent decrease in penis size, temporary changes can occur due to swelling and the healing process. If you continue to have concerns about the size or any other symptoms, it is crucial to follow up with your healthcare provider. They can assess your healing and provide reassurance or further evaluation if necessary. Remember, open communication with your healthcare provider is key to addressing any post-operative concerns you may have.
