Gastric Ulcers and Probiotics
Recently, a family member experienced heartburn and was diagnosed with a Helicobacter pylori infection and gastric ulcer.
It has been noted that in recent years, Bifidobacterium has shown significant progress in the prevention and treatment of food allergies, gastritis (including gastric ulcers) caused by Helicobacter pylori, and ulcerative colitis.
I would like to ask: 1.
Does Bifidobacterium truly have an effect on Helicobacter pylori infection? 2.
Are the probiotics Myolisan and Bifidobacterium longum effective in the treatment of Helicobacter pylori as well?

Probiotics, particularly strains like Bifidobacterium, have garnered attention for their potential role in managing Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infections and associated conditions such as peptic ulcers. H. pylori is a gram-negative bacterium that colonizes the gastric epithelium and is a well-established cause of chronic gastritis, peptic ulcers, and even gastric cancer. The standard treatment for H. pylori infection typically involves a combination of antibiotics and proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) to eradicate the bacteria and promote healing of the gastric mucosa.
1. Effectiveness of Bifidobacterium Against H. pylori: Research indicates that certain probiotic strains, including Bifidobacterium, may have a beneficial effect in the context of H. pylori infection. Probiotics can help restore the balance of gut microbiota, which can be disrupted by antibiotic treatment. They may also enhance the efficacy of standard H. pylori eradication therapies and reduce the side effects associated with antibiotics, such as diarrhea. Some studies suggest that probiotics can inhibit the growth of H. pylori by producing substances that are harmful to the bacteria or by competing for adhesion sites on the gastric epithelium. However, while probiotics can be a supportive adjunct to antibiotic therapy, they are not a replacement for antibiotics in the treatment of H. pylori.
2. Efficacy of Specific Probiotic Formulations: Regarding the specific probiotic formulations you mentioned, such as "妙利散" and "表飛鳴-樂散," it is essential to evaluate the strains included in these products. The effectiveness of probiotics can vary significantly depending on the strain and the formulation. Some probiotic products are specifically designed to target gastrointestinal issues and may contain strains that have been studied for their effects on H. pylori. However, the evidence supporting the efficacy of these specific products in treating H. pylori is not universally established. It is crucial to consult with a healthcare provider to determine the appropriateness of these probiotics in conjunction with standard H. pylori treatment.
In summary, while probiotics, particularly Bifidobacterium, show promise in supporting the treatment of H. pylori infections and peptic ulcers, they should be used as an adjunct to, rather than a substitute for, conventional antibiotic therapy. The primary goal remains the effective eradication of H. pylori through established treatment protocols. If you or your family member is considering the use of probiotics, it is advisable to discuss this with a healthcare professional who can provide guidance based on the latest research and individual health needs.
