Anal itching

In the past two months, after bowel movements, when wiping the anus or when washing the area during a shower, the perianal region has been extremely itchy.
The more I wipe or wash, the itchier it becomes.
What could be the cause of this condition? Thank you, doctor, for your help in answering this.

Anal itching, also known as pruritus ani, is a common condition that can be quite uncomfortable and distressing. It can arise from a variety of causes, and understanding these can help in finding appropriate relief.

Causes of Anal Itching
1. Hygiene Issues: Both inadequate and excessive cleaning can lead to irritation. Insufficient cleaning can leave fecal matter that irritates the skin, while excessive cleaning, especially with harsh soaps or wipes, can strip the skin of its natural oils and lead to dryness and irritation.

2. Skin Conditions: Conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, or contact dermatitis can affect the anal area, leading to itching. These conditions may be exacerbated by moisture, friction, or irritants.

3. Infections: Fungal infections, such as candidiasis, or bacterial infections can cause itching. Pinworms, particularly in children, are another common cause of anal itching.

4. Dietary Factors: Certain foods and beverages, such as caffeine, alcohol, spicy foods, and acidic foods, can irritate the anal area and lead to itching.

5. Medical Conditions: Conditions such as hemorrhoids, anal fissures, or inflammatory bowel diseases (like Crohn's disease) can also cause anal itching. These conditions may lead to discomfort and itching due to inflammation or irritation.

6. Hygiene Products: Some people may develop sensitivities to certain soaps, toilet papers, or laundry detergents, which can lead to irritation and itching.

Solutions for Relief
1. Proper Hygiene: Maintain good hygiene by gently cleaning the anal area with mild soap and water. Avoid using harsh soaps or wipes that contain alcohol or fragrances. Pat the area dry instead of rubbing it.

2. Moisturizing: If dryness is an issue, consider applying a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer to the area after cleaning. This can help soothe the skin and prevent irritation.

3. Avoid Irritants: Identify and avoid any potential irritants, including certain foods, soaps, or hygiene products that may be causing the itching.

4. Dietary Adjustments: Keep a food diary to identify any foods that may trigger your symptoms. Reducing or eliminating these foods may help alleviate itching.

5. Over-the-Counter Treatments: There are various over-the-counter creams and ointments that can help relieve itching. Look for products containing hydrocortisone or antifungal ingredients if a fungal infection is suspected.

6. Consult a Healthcare Provider: If the itching persists despite self-care measures, or if you notice any unusual symptoms such as bleeding, discharge, or severe pain, it is important to consult a healthcare provider. They can perform a thorough examination, identify any underlying conditions, and recommend appropriate treatments.

7. Avoid Scratching: While it may be tempting to scratch the area, this can worsen irritation and lead to further complications, including infections. Keeping nails trimmed and wearing loose-fitting clothing can help minimize irritation.

Conclusion
Anal itching can be a frustrating and uncomfortable condition, but understanding its potential causes can lead to effective management strategies. By practicing good hygiene, avoiding irritants, and seeking medical advice when necessary, individuals can find relief from this common issue. If symptoms persist or worsen, it is crucial to consult a healthcare professional for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.
