Voice problems related to the Adam's apple?

Hello doctor, I would like to ask if it is normal for the Adam's apple to rise when speaking.
I have seen some people whose Adam's apple does not rise when they talk, and they have a deep voice.
My voice is quite high and somewhat resembles a female voice, but I speak naturally and relaxed without any discomfort.
So I would like to ask you, doctor, if my high voice is caused by the rising of my Adam's apple.
Thank you.

A-Dai, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2018/07/12

Dr. Zheng Jueyi reply Otolaryngology

Hello: The pitch of one's voice is largely determined by genetics and is not directly related to the elevation of the Adam's apple.
Wishing you peace and health.
Sincerely, Dr.
Cheng Jue-Yi, Director of the Department of Otolaryngology, Taoyuan General Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

When it comes to voice changes and the role of the Adam's apple (laryngeal prominence) in influencing vocal tone, it's essential to understand the anatomy and physiology of the voice production system. The Adam's apple is a prominent feature of the thyroid cartilage surrounding the larynx (voice box). In males, this structure is typically more pronounced due to hormonal influences during puberty, which also leads to a deeper voice. In females, the Adam's apple is less prominent, and their vocal cords are generally shorter and thinner, contributing to a higher pitch.

In your case, you mentioned that your voice is naturally high and somewhat feminine, and you are curious if the elevation of your Adam's apple during speech is affecting your tone. It's important to note that the position of the Adam's apple does not directly determine the pitch of your voice. Instead, the pitch is primarily influenced by the length and tension of the vocal cords. When you speak, the vocal cords vibrate, and the frequency of these vibrations determines the pitch of your voice.
The elevation of the Adam's apple during speech can occur as a natural part of vocalization, especially when using certain vocal techniques or when expressing emotion. This movement is controlled by the muscles around the larynx and is not inherently problematic. If you are speaking comfortably and without strain, this elevation is likely a normal part of your vocal behavior.

However, if you are concerned about your voice being perceived as high or if you wish to modify your vocal tone, voice training may be beneficial. Voice training can help you learn how to control your vocal cords better, adjust your pitch, and develop a more resonant sound. Many individuals, including transgender individuals seeking to feminize their voice, find that working with a speech-language pathologist or a voice coach can be incredibly helpful. They can provide tailored exercises to help you achieve your desired vocal quality while ensuring that you do not strain your voice.

In summary, the elevation of your Adam's apple during speech is likely a normal physiological response and does not directly cause your voice to be high. The pitch of your voice is primarily determined by the characteristics of your vocal cords. If you are comfortable speaking and do not experience any pain or discomfort, there may not be a need for concern. However, if you wish to explore voice modification further, consider seeking professional guidance through voice training. This can help you achieve a vocal quality that aligns with your identity and personal preferences while maintaining vocal health.
