Nipple dark spots
Hello, doctor.
Recently, I have noticed small black spots on my nipples, present on both sides, appearing in the folds.
Could this be due to pigment deposition or insufficient cleaning of secretions? (I am not pregnant.) Additionally, I would like to ask how I should clean the area regularly.
I usually just use soap to lightly wash it, but I have seen online that some people use cotton balls? Thank you!

Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello, based on your description, those black tissues may be normal if they are not causing any specific symptoms; it’s just that you may not have paid much attention to them before.
However, if there are signs such as rough texture, bleeding, enlargement, or any other discomfort, it is advisable to consult a gynecologist or a breast surgeon for relevant examinations to determine if treatment is necessary.
Regular cleaning with appropriate hygiene products, cotton balls, or cotton swabs is sufficient.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health.

More Info
The appearance of black spots on the nipples can be concerning, and it’s important to understand the potential causes and appropriate cleaning methods. Based on your description, these spots could be due to a variety of reasons, including pigmentation changes, accumulation of debris, or even benign skin conditions.
Possible Causes of Black Spots on Nipples
1. Hyperpigmentation: This is a common cause of dark spots on the skin, including the nipples. It can occur due to hormonal changes, friction, or even sun exposure. In some cases, it may be a result of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation from previous irritation or trauma to the area.
2. Seborrheic Keratosis: This is a benign skin growth that can appear as a small, dark spot. It is generally harmless and often requires no treatment unless it becomes bothersome.
3. Milia: These are small, white or yellowish cysts that can appear on the skin, including the nipple area. They are caused by keratin trapped beneath the skin's surface.
4. Fungal Infections: Sometimes, fungal infections can lead to discoloration or dark spots on the skin. This is usually accompanied by other symptoms such as itching or irritation.
5. Poor Hygiene: Accumulation of sweat, dead skin cells, and other debris can lead to dark spots. This is particularly true if the area is not cleaned properly.
Cleaning Tips
To maintain good hygiene and potentially reduce the appearance of these spots, consider the following cleaning tips:
1. Gentle Cleansing: Use a mild, fragrance-free soap to gently cleanse the nipple area. Avoid harsh soaps that can irritate the skin. It’s important to clean the area thoroughly but gently to avoid causing irritation.
2. Use of Cotton Balls or Pads: Some people prefer using cotton balls or pads soaked in a gentle cleanser or warm water to clean the area. This can help remove any accumulated debris more effectively than just using your hands.
3. Moisturizing: After cleansing, consider applying a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer to keep the skin hydrated. This can help prevent dryness and irritation, which may contribute to pigmentation changes.
4. Avoiding Irritants: Be cautious with any products you apply to the area, including lotions or perfumes, as these can sometimes cause irritation or allergic reactions.
5. Regular Monitoring: Keep an eye on the spots. If they change in size, color, or shape, or if you experience any discomfort, it’s important to consult a healthcare professional for further evaluation.
When to Seek Medical Advice
If the black spots persist, change in appearance, or are accompanied by other symptoms such as itching, pain, or discharge, it is advisable to consult a dermatologist. They can provide a proper diagnosis and recommend appropriate treatments if necessary.
In summary, while black spots on the nipples can be benign and related to pigmentation or hygiene issues, it’s essential to maintain proper cleaning habits and monitor any changes. If you have concerns, don’t hesitate to seek professional advice for peace of mind and appropriate care.
