Postoperative care after varicocele surgery?

Hello, I underwent varicocele surgery with a 3 cm incision on the left side above the scrotum, along with bilateral vasectomy.

1.
It has been about 12 days since the left varicocele surgery, but the pain in the left scrotum is more pronounced than before the surgery.
Is this normal?
2.
On the day of the surgery, I felt pain on the left side of the genital area, and even after 12 days, the pain persists, especially when lying on my right side at night, making it difficult to sleep.
Turning to my left side seems to alleviate the pain.
What could be the reason for this? Will it heal on its own, or do I need to return for a check-up? If it can heal naturally, how long might that take?
3.
How long after the surgery should I wait before resuming sexual activity?

Hello: 1) Surgery will cause pain, but it should be at a tolerable level.
2) If the pain persists and becomes unbearable, it is advisable to return for a follow-up consultation.
Post-surgical pain usually improves gradually, typically within 1-3 weeks.
3) Personally, I recommend around 4 weeks, but you should still consult your physician.
Wishing you good health.

Post-varicocele surgery recovery can be a complex process, and it’s not uncommon for patients to experience discomfort and pain during the healing phase. Here’s a comprehensive overview addressing your concerns regarding pain, recovery, and sexual activity after varicocele surgery.

1. Post-operative Pain: It is not unusual to experience increased pain in the affected area after varicocele surgery, especially within the first few weeks. The pain you are feeling in the left side of your scrotum could be attributed to several factors, including inflammation, nerve irritation, or even the healing process itself. After surgery, the body goes through a healing phase where tissues repair, and this can sometimes lead to heightened sensitivity or discomfort. If the pain is significantly worse than what you experienced before the surgery, it is essential to monitor it closely. Pain that persists or worsens over time may warrant a follow-up with your surgeon to rule out complications such as infection or hematoma (a localized collection of blood outside of blood vessels).

2. Pain During Sleep: The discomfort you experience when lying on your right side could be due to the positioning of your body and the pressure it places on the surgical site. When you lie on your right side, it may inadvertently put pressure on the left side of your scrotum, exacerbating the pain. This is a common issue post-surgery, as the body adjusts to the changes made during the procedure. It’s advisable to find a comfortable sleeping position that minimizes pressure on the surgical site. If the pain continues to disrupt your sleep or daily activities, it’s crucial to consult your healthcare provider. They may recommend pain management strategies or further evaluation to ensure there are no underlying issues.

3. Recovery Timeline: The recovery period after varicocele surgery can vary from person to person. Generally, most patients can expect to return to normal activities within a few weeks, but full recovery may take longer. It’s essential to listen to your body and avoid strenuous activities, including heavy lifting and intense exercise, for at least a few weeks post-surgery. As for sexual activity, many surgeons recommend waiting at least 2 to 4 weeks after surgery before resuming sexual intercourse. This allows time for the surgical site to heal and reduces the risk of complications. However, it’s important to consult your surgeon for personalized advice based on your specific situation.

4. Follow-Up Care: Regular follow-up appointments with your surgeon are crucial for monitoring your recovery. During these visits, you can discuss any ongoing pain, changes in symptoms, and your overall healing process. If you notice any unusual symptoms, such as swelling, redness, or discharge from the surgical site, or if the pain becomes unbearable, do not hesitate to seek medical attention.

In summary, while some discomfort after varicocele surgery is expected, persistent or worsening pain should be evaluated by a healthcare professional. Recovery times can vary, and it’s essential to follow your surgeon’s recommendations regarding activity restrictions and resuming sexual intercourse. Always prioritize open communication with your healthcare provider to ensure a smooth recovery process.
