Medication Use in Pregnant Women
Hello, I am currently 6 weeks pregnant.
Recently, I have been experiencing severe nasal allergies, and my ENT doctor prescribed Delamin tablets 2mg to be taken four times a day.
Is this medication and dosage safe for the baby? Thank you.

Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello, the pregnancy safety category of this medication is classified as Category B.
Category B indicates that animal studies have shown no risk to the fetus, but there are no controlled studies conducted in pregnant women.
Thank you! Wishing you safety and health.

Delamin tablets, which contain the active ingredient Loratadine, are commonly used as an antihistamine to relieve allergy symptoms such as nasal congestion, sneezing, and runny nose. When it comes to the safety of using Delamin during pregnancy, it is essential to consider the classification of the drug and the available evidence regarding its effects on both the mother and the developing fetus.
According to the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) pregnancy category system, Loratadine is classified as a Category B medication. This classification indicates that animal reproduction studies have not demonstrated a risk to the fetus, but there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. In simpler terms, while animal studies have shown no harm, there is a lack of definitive human studies to confirm its safety during pregnancy.
For a pregnant woman in her sixth week, the use of Delamin at the prescribed dosage of 2 mg four times a day should generally be considered safe, especially when the benefits of alleviating severe allergy symptoms outweigh the potential risks. However, it is crucial to follow the guidance of a healthcare provider, as they can assess individual circumstances and provide personalized recommendations.
It is also important to note that during the first trimester, the developing fetus is particularly vulnerable to teratogenic effects (causing developmental malformations). Therefore, any medication taken during this period should be carefully evaluated. While Loratadine is considered relatively safe, it is always best to consult with your obstetrician or healthcare provider before starting any new medication during pregnancy.
In addition to medication, there are non-pharmacological approaches to managing allergy symptoms during pregnancy. These may include:
1. Avoiding Allergens: Identifying and avoiding triggers such as pollen, dust mites, and pet dander can help reduce symptoms without the need for medication.
2. Saline Nasal Rinses: Using saline sprays or rinses can help clear nasal passages and alleviate congestion.
3. Humidifiers: Keeping the air moist can help soothe irritated nasal passages.
4. Staying Hydrated: Drinking plenty of fluids can help thin mucus and relieve congestion.
5. Consulting an Allergist: If allergies are severe, consulting with a specialist may provide additional options for management that are safe during pregnancy.
In summary, while Delamin (Loratadine) is classified as a Category B medication and is generally considered safe for use during pregnancy, it is essential to consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice. They can help weigh the benefits against any potential risks and explore alternative treatments if necessary. Always prioritize open communication with your healthcare team to ensure the health and safety of both you and your baby.
