Mycoplasma pneumonia, cough issues cannot be resolved!
Hello Doctor, I was diagnosed with Mycoplasma pneumonia, bronchial type, around the end of June 2018.
At that time, I received medication treatment, and blood tests confirmed the diagnosis, but my cough issue has not been resolved! Starting from July 12-13, 2018, I began to experience a recurrence of symptoms.
I went for another consultation on July 27 because the cough issue was persistent and unmanageable.
During this period, my severe coughing episodes are sporadic, and sometimes I cough so hard that I almost feel like vomiting.
My throat feels scratchy, leading to intense coughing, which is usually dry, and sometimes I only produce a small amount of sputum.
When lying flat, I experience some nasal congestion! How long does one typically need to take medication before it can be considered chronic bronchitis? Would you recommend traditional Chinese medicine? Since July 27, I have not taken any medication due to diarrhea issues; my doctor suggested taking probiotics, so I refrained from medication during that time, fearing it might be the cause.
The doctor also used a stethoscope and confirmed that my lungs are clear! After July 27, I have been taking probiotics, and my diarrhea has improved! However, the sporadic and severe coughing still persists.
How long should I expect Mycoplasma-related cough to last before it resolves? What direction should I take for further medical consultation? Can Mycoplasma evolve into asthma? Thank you!

It is advisable to discuss with your attending physician the situation after taking the medication and the appropriateness of using traditional Chinese medicine.
Wishing you good health.

More Info
Mycoplasma pneumonia, often referred to as atypical pneumonia, is caused by the bacterium Mycoplasma pneumoniae. This type of pneumonia is known for its insidious onset and can lead to persistent cough and other respiratory symptoms. Given your history of bronchial pneumonia diagnosed in June 2018, it seems that you have been dealing with a lingering cough that has not fully resolved despite treatment.
Understanding Mycoplasma Pneumonia and Persistent Cough
Mycoplasma pneumonia typically presents with symptoms such as a dry cough, sore throat, fever, and fatigue. The cough can be persistent and may worsen at night or when lying down, which aligns with your experience of coughing and nasal congestion when lying flat. The cough associated with Mycoplasma pneumonia can be particularly troublesome, sometimes leading to gagging or vomiting due to the intensity of the cough.
Duration and Diagnosis of Chronic Bronchitis
Chronic bronchitis is characterized by a productive cough that lasts for at least three months in two consecutive years. However, in your case, the cough seems to be more related to the residual effects of the Mycoplasma infection rather than chronic bronchitis, especially since your lung examinations have been clear. If the cough persists beyond a few weeks after the initial infection, it may be classified as a post-infectious cough, which can take time to resolve.
Treatment Options
1. Antibiotics: If you have not been treated with antibiotics recently, it may be worth discussing with your healthcare provider the possibility of a course of macrolide antibiotics (like azithromycin) or tetracyclines (like doxycycline), which are effective against Mycoplasma pneumoniae.
2. Symptomatic Relief: Over-the-counter cough suppressants or expectorants may help manage your symptoms. However, it's essential to consult with your doctor before starting any new medication, especially if you have a history of gastrointestinal issues.
3. Bronchodilators: If you are experiencing wheezing or shortness of breath, a bronchodilator may be beneficial. This is particularly relevant if you have a history of asthma or if your cough is associated with bronchospasm.
4. Cough Management: Staying hydrated and using a humidifier can help soothe your throat and reduce coughing. Additionally, avoiding irritants such as smoke, strong odors, and allergens can also be beneficial.
Considerations for Further Evaluation
Given your ongoing symptoms, it may be prudent to follow up with a healthcare provider specializing in respiratory conditions, such as a pulmonologist. They may recommend further testing, such as a chest X-ray or pulmonary function tests, to rule out any underlying conditions that could be contributing to your persistent cough.
Potential for Asthma Development
While Mycoplasma pneumonia itself does not directly cause asthma, individuals with a history of respiratory infections may be at an increased risk for developing reactive airway disease or asthma-like symptoms. If you notice wheezing or difficulty breathing, it would be essential to discuss these symptoms with your healthcare provider, as they may warrant further evaluation and management.
Conclusion
In summary, your persistent cough following a Mycoplasma pneumonia infection is not uncommon and can take time to resolve. It is essential to work closely with your healthcare provider to determine the best course of action, which may include further evaluation, potential antibiotic therapy, and symptomatic management. If your symptoms worsen or new symptoms develop, do not hesitate to seek medical attention.
